MGMT20004 Managing People at Work
Semester 2, 2023, Assignment 1
Individual Assignment - Worth 20% of the total mark for the subject
This assignment asks you to analyse a case, drawing on academic literature to answer three
questions. To answer the questions, you must read the Case Study available on LMS:
Reimagining Employee Centricity:
The Digital Transformation of HR Function at DBS
NTU259-PDF-ENG
https://hbsp.harvard.edu/tu/0bf9c7f8
In your assignment, please answer all three questions and all parts of each question. Please
note, this assignment follows a question-and-answer format. There is no need to provide an
overall introduction and conclusion to the assignment – simply indicate the question you
are answering. Write in the ‘third person’ (e.g. do not write ‘I think…’ in your assignment).
Each question is equally weighted, and you should divide the word count of the total
assignment accordingly. For example, as a guide, write 500 words for each question.
In formulating your answers to all three questions, please draw on relevant literature
particularly academic theory and research. There are minimum requirements for use of
academic references (explained further under readings below).
Question 1
The DBS Bank HR Department has invested a fair amount of resources to digitalise and
automate the employee life cycle experience from recruitment to departing the
organization. Identify three (3) of the specific people initiatives in the Case study and discuss
the strategic human resource management implications.
Due: 5:00 pm, Friday 1st September
Submit via Managing People at Work Subject >

Overall word length: 1,500 words
Word count EXCLUDES: in-text citations and reference list

Question 2
DBS HR needed to transform itself successfully before being able to support the bank’s
digital transformation strategy. Identify the two (2) strategies on how DBS HR change itself
to operate digitally and to deliver employee-focused services. Discuss the possible risks and
limitations of these digital transformation strategies?
Question 3
To become “digital to the core”, the bank has to go beyond the Singapore labour market to
attract global talent with new digital skills. Applying relevant academic theories, identify
two (2) initiatives of DBS to attract talent and recommend strategic human resource
practices to retain talent in a global war for digital talent.
Readings
You are expected to use the textbook as well as all of the required readings listed below in
your response. (You can use an earlier edition of the textbook (e.g. the 9th edition) if you are
unable to access the 10th edition). These required readings are found on Readings Online
under the folder
You must also use at least three other academic sources. These can be articles which
appear in academic peer-reviewed journals or scholarly books, peer–reviewed conference
proceedings (particularly for information technology or information systems–related
research) and edited collections. For example, The Oxford Handbook of Organizational
Socialization and The Wiley Blackwell Handbook of the Psychology of Recruitment, Selection
and Employee Retention are both edited scholarly collections. This means they have
chapters contributed by different authors and an overall editor or editorial team. Each
chapter contributed by a different author would count as one (1) scholarly source. If an
entire book was written by one person or a group of people (such as your textbook)
multiple chapters would be counted as only one (1) scholarly source.
You can use relevant readings available on readings online (on our LMS page) and these
count as scholarly sources. If you are in doubt as to whether a source is considered
‘academic’, please consult your tutor in the first instance.
In addition, you can also refer to non-academic sources (e.g. websites, newspapers,
professional or trade magazines, industry literature) but your basic argument should be
built around the evidence and ideas contained in academic sources.

Plagiarism and collusion
Please note: Your assignment will also be screened for plagiarism using the
Turnitin software program. More information about the university’s policy and the
Turnitin program is available from the following website:
http://academichonesty.unimelb.edu.au
Presenting material from other sources without full acknowledgement (referred
to as plagiarism) is heavily penalised. Penalties for plagiarism can include a
mark of zero for the piece of assessment or a fail grade for the subject.
Plagiarism is the presentation by a student of an assignment identified as his or
her own work even though it has been copied in whole or in part from another
student’s work, or from any other source (e.g. published books, web-based
materials or periodicals), without due acknowledgement in the text.
Collusion is the presentation by a student of an assignment as his or her own
work when it is, in fact, the result (in whole or in part) of unauthorised
collaboration with another person or persons. Both the student presenting the
assignment and the student(s) willingly supplying unauthorised material are
considered participants in the act of academic misconduct.
The Academic Skills unit has prepared a help sheet on avoiding plagiarism.
Word count
Total word limit 1,500 (word count EXCLUDES: in-text citations and reference
list) +/- 10% either way is acceptable (penalties apply for exceeding the word
limit – refer to information below).
Assignment extensions and penalties for late submissions
Late submission of an assignment is permitted only where an extension has been
granted. Requests for an extension can be made via the LMS - a link to online
application form can be found in the Assignment Extension tab. All requests for
an extension must be made prior to the assessment due date.
Unless an extension has been granted, penalties to the assessment will be applied
To ensure equality for all students, assignments must be completed within specified time
limits. Late submissions will attract a marking penalty where approval for late submission
has not been given. Assignments that exceed word limits may also attract a marking
penalty.
Penalties for late submission: The mark a student is awarded for their work will be
reduced by 5% for each day the work is late. For example, an assignment
submitted any time on Monday 5th September will receive a 5% penalty.
6
Exceeding word count
Assignments that exceed the word limit by more than 10% may attract a marking penalty of
10% of the marks that would otherwise have been awarded.
Assignments that exceed the word limit by 25% or more may attract a higher penalty,
including a cap on the maximum grade awarded. For example, an assignment with a limit of
1000 words will be marked down by 10% if there are more than 1100 words. If there are
1250 words or more, the maximum result that may be awarded is a H2B.
Special consideration
Students who have been significantly affected by illness or other serious circumstances
during the semester may be eligible to apply for Special Consideration.
Students apply for Special Consideration through My Unimelb via the Apply for Special
Consideration link under Exams and Assessment in the Admin tab.
You must submit your online application no later than 4 working days after the due date for
submission or examination of the particular component of assessment to which your
application refers.
