MOBILE AND UBIQUITOUS COMPUTING MODULE 2023 SUPPLEMENTARY ASSIGNMENT
The Design Concept
The design concept will be an Internet of Things system that will be installed in Shopping Mall to be
used by shoppers. The system which will include (at least) one app running on a smart phone and
(at least) three ‘things’, i.e., in the Internet of Things, a ‘thing’ is a small, semi-autonomous device
which is capable of collecting data from its environment (using sensors), processing and sharing
these data, and performing an action (this could be a physical action, such as turning devices on or
off, or changing the shape of the ‘thing’). The purposes of the concept could include helping
shoppers navigate the Mall; providing information on the location of different types of shops; giving
updates on sales and other promotions by the stores; offering discount codes for specific purchases
etc. You will create your own interpretation of this concept as the basis for your report.
A design concept is NOT a fully functioning prototype. You do NOT need to build or programme any
of the elements that your design concept employs. But you WILL be expected to be able to show
how each element will function and how it will communicate with the other elements. You can
show this functionality and communications through diagrams and provide detailed explanations of
these to demonstrate that you understand how the design concept could be implemented.
What to include in the Technical Report?
We expect the technical report to be up to 15 pages in length. We have provided an approximate
word count as a guide (you do NOT to have exactly this number of words and plus or minus 20%
would be fine). The word count relates the marks for each section (which indicate the maximum
marks you can expect for each section).
The Marking Scheme, in the table below, shows the maximum marks for each section of the report.
We expect you to use the ‘Report Section’ headings in this table for your report.

Guidance on Content
Abstract 4 400 An informative summary of the report
which clearly explains how your
design concept addresses a specific
problem
Application domain and problem 6 600 Explain in detail what problem is being
addressed and why it requires solving.
You should also consider how this
problem is currently solved. Provide a
table of the Stakeholders who might
be affected by the concept.
System Architecture 5 500 A clearly labelled diagram showing the
elements on your design concept and
how they connect to each other. A
detailed explanation of how the
design concept operates. This could be
presented in the form of a class
diagram.
Definition of Context Widgets 7 700 Specify the Context Widgets used by
your design concept. Each widget
could be an elaboration of a class in
the class diagram (from the system
architecture section).
smart phone app functionality 7 700 Explain how the phone app could be
constructed, e.g., in terms of the
widget tree
w3 Thing Description for each ‘thing’ 7 700 Using the w3 notion define each
‘thing’ in your system concept.
Describe in detail how the Interaction
Affordances can be instantiated.
Managing Human-Computer Interaction 5 500 Explain, perhaps with a storyboard,
how users will interact with your
design concept
Managing Security and Privacy 4 400 Demonstrate that you understand
potential risks to user security and
privacy that might arise from your
design concept. Give some examples
of how these risks could be addressed.
Approaches to Evaluation 5 500 Outline the criteria that you would use
to evaluate the design concept and
explain the tests that you would apply
to measure against these criteria. This
should include technical and non-
technical requirements.
