Semester 2 2023
Assignment: Digital Transformation Strategy – Growth Options
Weighting: 25%
Due Date: Friday 11:59pm week 7
Max Length: 12 pages

Assignment tasks
In this assignment, you will propose a digital transformation case for a specific client (organisation
or organisational unit) or a generic entity (e.g., churches, governments, hospitals, etc.). This digital
transformation proposal should include three key aspects:
1. you need to perform an analysis of the external environment and the internal structure
your client operates in, with the aim of identifying problems to be addressed or
opportunities to be captured.
2. you need to strategically analyse the client’s business model and identify areas of the
business model that can be positively influenced by a digital intervention. That is,
identifying the ‘strategic fit’ for a digital transformation.
3. you will identify at least three alternative growth options that can lead to productive
change for your client (e.g., grow profitably in a competitive environment).
You have the choice of using any entities as your client(s), including an organisation you have
previously been employed by or are currently working for. However, please make sure that you
have sufficient access to evidence (i.e., data) about the organisation. Finding evidence is generally
easier for publicly traded companies, but you are free to use privately held companies, not-for
profit organisations or government agencies.
Your proposed growth options should include a ‘basic case’ that shows your client’s current
business model and projected growth, e.g., in their annual report or derived from the company
strategy (i.e., two of the three growth options are new). While the base case may not involve
digital transformation, the two new growth options must involve digital transformations. The
assignment should also include specific recommendations about which growth option you
recommend, in terms of its economic logic based on: (a) an analysis of the attractiveness of the
growth options through a cost-benefit analysis, (b) identification of synergies with the existing
business processes through leveraging resources and capabilities (from your business model
analysis), (c) an identification of major risks of the growth option and ways to mitigate these risks,
and (d) illustration of how digital transformation is achieved.
One suggestion in coming up with your growth options is to engage in some design thinking and
then to narrow down your list of options that you are including in your analysis.
The assignment will develop your skills and capabilities to:
 analyse a business’s current environment, structure, and potential threats to its
business model,
 propose a set of growth options, analyse their cost-benefit effects and their economic
logic, and
 evaluate the options and recommend the one that can create the most value for the
client.
Note that the recommended length does not include the cover letter (1 page).
Referencing
All sources used in the assignment must be properly referenced so that the reader can find that
same piece of information that you used as evidence. While no particular referencing style is
prescribed, whichever you use (Harvard, APA, etc.), use it consistently throughout the assignment.
