Assignment 1 – Individual Assignment
Word limit: 1,000 to 1,500 words.

The student is tasked to serve as an innovation management consultant for a small startup
company with less than 20 employees. You can select any one of the following industries to
complete your assignment:
• Software Company
• Electrical Appliance Manufacturers
• SMEs setting up Online retailer

Students should utilise the concepts, theories and/or approaches learnt from the course to
write an essay to discuss suitable ways for encouraging, assessing, and improving the
innovation performance of the company.

Assignment 1a (10%): Due Date: 1 Apr 2021
Word Limit: 500 to 700 words
(i) Explain the importance of innovation to the company and describe the critical
issues and sources of innovation.
(ii) Discuss the critical elements for assessing culture in the context of innovation.

Assignment 1b (15%): Due Date: 6 May 2021
Word Limit: 600 to 800 words

(iii) Suggest tools for the company to assess and select innovation projects
(iv) Propose a project model and/or team structure for improving the company’s
innovation performance;
(v) Recommend ways for assessing and improving the innovation performance of the
