Case Study 1: Volkswagen Diesel Emissions Scandal: In September 2015, it was revealed that
Volkswagen had installed software in its diesel engines that could detect when the cars were being
tested for emissions and adjust the performance of the engines to pass the tests. However, the
vehicles emitted nitrogen oxide at levels up to 40 times higher than permitted by US law. Volkswagen
admitted to cheating on emissions tests and paid over $30 billion in fines and penalties. The scandal
damaged the company's reputation and led to a decline in sales.
