ECON90015 Exam Information
2
In the last lecture I mentioned that a photograph of the
exam might be allowed but it turns out they are NOT
The confusion is that you can use your phone camera to
make a SCANNED image (which is different from a
photo)
“Scans with a camera are not a photo, they are done
using an app and uses the phones camera, but they are
not photos.”
Exam Format
ECON90015 Exam Information

This exam is worth 50% of your final grade (No hurdle)
The exam questions will be short answer (ie not essay questions,
not multiple-choice questions)
Typically, the question will be broken up into parts: a), b), c), etc
to allow for part marks
Style similar to tutorial questions generally problem solving (eg
find the monopoly price) or explain (why is a cartel unstable)
Note: To give you an idea of my type of exam, I have posted last
year’s exam on Canvas-LMS (no solutions)

15 minutes Reading Time + 2 hours
Writing Time + 30 minutes Uploading
ECON90015 Exam Information
6
You have 15 minutes reading time + 2 hours writing time
After that, you must stop writing and submit your exam
To allow for time for you to organize your answers and scan
into a pdf and upload it, you are allowed an additional 30
minutes to submit your exam without penalty
This time is for submitting only, not writing your exam
You will not be able to submit after this (you will get zero on
your exam) – if you have technical issues in uploading your
exam, you must apply for Technical Special Considerations
Submitting Exam

Submission of Exam: Your answers are to be submitted by uploading
your pdf file to the ECON90015 Canvas Assignments page
Handwritten answers – including graphs – are fine (but is your
responsibility to be legible)
Please start your answer to each question on a new page (but not each
part of a question a), b), …)
Don’t bother writing out the questions – just write your answers
Please submit all of your answers in one file with your Student ID
legibly shown on the first page.
If you have difficulty putting your answers in one file, submitting multiple
files is acceptable, but make sure to put your Student ID on the first
page of each file)

Do you have your Student ID typed (or clearly written) at the top of
your answer pdf? (Make one now before the exam)
Are you sure you are uploading your answer pdf (and not the questions
for example)?
I would prefer one Answers pdf, but if you have multiple pdfs, make
sure you have included all of them and your Student ID is on each
A Word document is also acceptable

• I expect most of you will choose to write your
answers by hand and then scan them in. If you go
down this route, please practise with whatever
scanning device or app you plan to use BEFORE
the exam date.
• Also, make sure to give yourself enough time to
scan and upload your answers. To help with that, I
will post a practice exam and set up a
submission shell so you can simulate working
under exam conditions. I will send another
announcement when they are ready.

Let me repeat: please test whichever method you
choose for finalising and submitting your answers
before your exam day, be familiar with all its steps,
know how long it takes, and factor that time into your
exam time.
Practising that step, knowing how much time you will
need for it, making sure you are comfortable with the
technological side of it, and ensuring you can do it
quickly will be helpful in giving you more time and
peace of mind during the final exam. Final exams are
stressful even without worrying about whether
scanning and uploading will go according to plan: so,
save yourself the worry and PRACTISE, PRACTISE,
PRACTISE.

• If you want to use pen(cil)+paper for the exam
but you don't have a scanner, please note that
there is a number of smartphone/tablet apps
that use your device's camera to make a highly
legible scan of your answers. (This is different
from simply taking a photo of your answer!)

To avoid technical issues, consider connecting directly
to your modem rather than relying on your WiFi
connection. If you are typing your answers, consider
using a service (e.g. Dropbox, OneDrive) that
automatically backs up your work and synchronises it
to the cloud.
When submitting the file with your answers, you may
wish to carefully check that you are submitting the
correct file. Keep a copy of your submission together
with the confirmation of your successful submission.
Remember that you can re-upload files if you make a
mistake.
