• Include data/statistics on its prevalence
• What are common sign/symptoms experienced with the condition? Or
how is it diagnosed?
• What may be some risk factors which are not dietary or lifestyle related
which can cause this condition?
2. Critically analyse dietary & lifestyle factors associated with this chronic
condition
3. Identification of specific or vulnerable population groups
• Consider non-modifiable risk factors (e.g. age, gender, ethnicity, etc.)
4. Provide research-based recommendations to prevent the development,
and/or, manage the chronic condition
• Support your discussion points with peer-reviewed citations.
What to include for Part 1?
Part 2a. Sports Nutrition
Requirements (750 words
approx.)
Using peer reviewed academic literature to support your response,
discuss the nutritional demands of elite-level athlete in a sport of
your choice.
Things to consider:
• A summary of the physical requirements of the sport and
training (e.g. energy systems utilised, endurance requirements,
muscular requirements, recovery requirements)
• Nutritional requirements of athletes within the sport (you can
present this in a table)
• Energy (kJ)
• Macronutrients (i.e. protein, carbohydrate &
dietary fat)
• Key micronutrients (if applicable/relevant) to
chosen sport
• Hydration requirements (if applicable/relevant) to
chosen sport
What to include for Part 2a?
• Begin with an introduction or overview to the chosen sport
• Name of the sport
• Team-based? Individual sport?
• Describe the physical requirements of the sport & training regimen
• Endurance or power based? Energy systems involved?
• What does a typical training session involve? How does an elite athlete train to
prepare for competition?
• Recovery protocol (e.g. stretching, ice baths etc…)
• Identify & compare nutrition requirements for pre-competition, competition and
recovery.
• Include protocols which are appropriate and/or specific to the sport
• E.g marathon runners will have protocols for pre comp (lead up to race), pre race day, race day,
during race & recovery while a footy player who competes weekly will have a protocol for pre
comp, during the week, game day & recovery straight after a game
• Refer to next slide if using a summary table
• Discussion points must be supported with peer-reviewed citations.
Using a
summary
table…
• Nutrition requirements can be presented in a
summary table
• Include an explanation about the relevance of this data,
linked to the physical demands of the sport, as part of the
main discussion for part 2a
• Marks deducted if data is presented without providing
any explanation
• Helpful strategy to save on word count
• Example of a summary table (note: this data has been
made up!):
Table 1: Nutrition recommendations for a 22 yr old female CrossFit athlete during
competition and for recovery phases (Lee et al., 2020).
Nutrition recommendations
Nutrient During competition Recovery
Energy (kJ/d) 10 000 1 000
Protein (g/d 150 20
Carbohydrate (g/d) 500 100
Fluids (l/d) 2.5 250
Sodium (mg/d) 50 20
Part 2b. –
Supplementation (750
words approx.)
Provide justification of a supplement that may improve
performance in the sport selected in Part 2a. This section
should:
1. Provide evidence of efficacy using peer reviewed
academic literature throughout.
2. Provide a review of the supplement:
1. how it works in the body,
2. how much scientific evidence is available to
support its use,
3. its classification within WADA & ASADA for safe
and legal use,
4. potential disadvantages or side effects of its use.
3. Identify aspects of the sport where the supplement
might be advantageous.
4. Link with Part 2a to provide justification for use in the
chosen sport.
What to include in Part 2b?
• Identify what are the most appropriate supplements that will support performance of an elite
athlete in your chosen sport.
• How/why are the proposed supplements helpful for the athlete, i.e. mechanisms of action. Link
these to the physical demands of the sport (part 2a) as justification.
• Explain the evidence on:
• Efficacy
• Protocol (e.g. recommended dose)
• Safety
• Side effects
• WADA/ASADA classification
• Discussion points must be supported with peer-reviewed citations.
• Week 9 tutorial will be helpful for this section.
