Task Description:
ECON2560: Globalization and Development, Semester 2, 2023
Country Paper: Guidelines and Instructions
This assignment is worth 45% of the total assessment in the course.
Students are required to write a country paper of 3,000 words in length (a minimum of 2,975 words and a maximum of 3,025
words) excluding the abstract, tables, figures, and references.
Due Date, Time, and Submission:
As per the ASSESSMENT section of the ECP. Check the ECP regularly as the date may change due to unforeseen
circumstances.
Submission via turn-it-in only in the course blackboard by the due date and time. No other form of submission will
be ACCEPTABLE and will be treated as a NON-SUBMISSION.
Note: Time refers to Brisbane time (GMT + 10 hours).
Aim
 The objective of the Country Report is to have students undertake a research project and write it up in a formal, academic
manner using the data provided in Penn World Table and other sources such as World Development Indicators, and UNDP.
 Students should draw on the relevant theories and contextualize them. Students are also required to cite additional
empirical evidence from quality sources e.g., refereed journal articles to support conclusions. Students are required to
explain how the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war have impacted the economic performance of the country
of focus, taking into consideration the key public policy responses by the government of the Central Bank.
 Provide diagrams to explain the theory where appropriate. Diagrams must be clearly and correctly labeled, and you should
refer to them in your explanation and analysis. Descriptive statistics, graphs, and tables will be sufficient for data analysis.
Guidelines:
 Use appropriate growth/development theories.
 Give an overview of economic development during a defined period, e.g., economic development in China since 1980
focusing on the various episodes of policy changes.
 Internal circumstances or factors could include, amongst other things, resource endowments, population, social and cultural
factors, environmental hazards, and civil war.

 External circumstances or factors could include, amongst other things, world market conditions for the country’s major
exports, special trade arrangements, and aid dependency.
 Strategies and policies could be, amongst other things, pursued by the colonial and various post-independent governments,
and may include such approaches as rapid industrialization, export expansion, trade openness, and so on.
The Country Report seeks to test your ability to:
 Focus on a single country’s development trajectory over a period.
 Identify episodic changes typifying this time path.
 Demonstrate contribution to existing knowledge via this Report.
 Place the focus county’s development in a comparative perspective e.g., global, and regional.
 Demonstrate a good understanding of the relevant literature and the major issues.
 Demonstrate critical and analytical abilities and evidence of deeper learning.
 Identify the country’s resilience to cope with the impact of COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.
