CIS 381: Term Paper & Presentation
You are required to individually write a term paper (10-15 pages) about a specific topic related
to social, legal, and ethical issues of computing. Topics will be announced, and you will be
assigned to a group depending on your topic preference.
Each group will make a presentation during the last weeks of class where each individual
contributes equally, but your term paper must be written individually. Groups may choose to
examine the same issue through the lenses of different ethical frameworks or discuss the ethical
considerations in different issues that are all related to the same core topic.
Presentation
Due on the assigned presentation date. Each group member should speak for 3-3.5 minutes. If
you are all speaking on a similar issue, please try to have the first person provide the concise
overview of the issues before discussing the ethical considerations or evaluations from a
particular ethical framework.
Each presenter should focus on the ethical considerations for the issue they have selected.
Do not just describe the technology, but discuss the ethical issues surrounding the technology.
Requirements
• All group members present for 3-3.5 minutes
• All slides from a group should be collated in a single slide deck on a single machine
• Focus on the ethical issues surrounding technologies
• 4-5 slides per person
• Do not speak for more than four (4) minutes, or you will be docked points
• Rehearse and check your timing before the presentation
Paper
Papers are to be written individually. The paper should introduce the technologies involved and
provide necessary background, and then provide a detailed analysis of the issues and ethical
implications using the ethical frameworks discussed in class, finishing with a conclusion.
Requirements
• Issues must be well-presented, considering alternate viewpoints, and provide a well-
reasoned evaluation
• 10-15 pages in a 12-point standard font with 1.5 spacing
• Illustrations should not account for more than three (3) pages of content
• Cite at least eight (8) sources and provide a references section defined in a standard
format (e.g. IEEE)
• Good gramar, and, spelling  not like this!
• Good organization and paragraph structure
