4 Assessment information

4.1 The assignment

Assessment is through a written assignment of 5,000 words on themes connected with the module and a list of recommended titles will be provided. The list of titles is reviewed each academic year. Students are encouraged to meet with their tutor to discuss the assignment title before submitting a draft for formative feedback.

Students may vary the word Imit by 10% either way, but an essay with a word length of more than 5,500 words or less than 4,500 words will be reduced by one grade (no more than one grade will be deducted, and the mark will not be reduced below grade C/pass).

In the case of coursework that is submitted over- or under-length and is also submitted late, the greater of any penalties will apply.

The word count excludes content page, appendices, the list of references and bibliographies but includes footnotes, glossary, maps, diagrams and tables.

4.2 Guidelines on your assignment

There is a choice of topic for the Engineering and Education: Innovation, Practice and Leadership assignment. The list of titles relates to different sessions in the module and are described in broad terms to allow you to choose a focus that relates specifically to your professional context and your area of your interest. The assignment needs to provide evidence of understanding appropriate theoretical and conceptual perspectives on professionalism and expertise and an ability to purposefully link these to practice. Your tutor can help you think about the exact focus of your assignment.

There is no set structure for the assignments, not least as the options cover very different topics. However, there are some things we recommend you include in some form:
