EGH404: Written assessment

As part of your assessment for Teaching Practice 1, you will submit a 1,500-word essay through Turn-it-in on an aspect of learning and teaching covered in this module. This essay counts for 50% of the final mark for this module.

You are required to choose one of the essays below and provide a critical discussion of the language teaching and learning issues around your chosen topic. When choosing your topic, think about what you are interested in and what you would like to explore further.

If you want to suggest your own topic, please do so - instructions for doing this are below. Essentially your choice of topic should be something you are interested in and want to explore further.

Nicholas Northall's office hours are Wednesday 11-12 midday if you would like to discuss your work with me. (If these times don't work, just email me to arrange another time for a meeting. Meetings can be online or face-to-face; please let us know which you prefer.)

Your assessed essay must be submitted only on-line to Turn-it-in through Blackboard.

Essay Titles

Please choose ONE of the following essay topics.

1. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages Critically evaluate the effectiveness of the CEFR as a framework for evaluating language competence. Is the CEFR fit for purpose? What aspects of it may need to be improved?

2. Learner Motivation

Critically evaluate learner motivation as a factor in learning English. What aspects of motivation do you consider to be the most important? Can motivation ever become a negative factor when learning a language?

3. Learner needs

How can we effectively assess the needs of our learners? Consider which methods you find the most convincing and which methods may not give us an understanding of our learners' needs.

4. Teacher roles

What can teachers do to support their learners' language learning journeys?

Consider the roles teachers play in the classroom and how this may influence their learners. Could teachers have a negative impact on their learners?
