Instructions for Early Feedback Task:
Research and Annotations - Due
11:59pm, 23 February 2024.
Weighting: 10% of final mark
Word count: 500 words (+10% max)
Format: To be saved on Word (.doc or docx), must include SID and must be submitted via the
TURNITIN dropbox on Canvas.
Assignment topic: Television advertisements continue to impact consumers' purchasing
behaviour in shopping malls. (You may only write on this topic.)
Why such an early assignment?
Under the University's Support for Students Policy
(https://www.sydney.edu.au/policies/showdoc.aspx?recnum=PDOC2023/550&RendNum=0) (2023) all
1000 level units must include an assessment task identified as an ‘early feedback task’ in the
unit outline. Feedback provided two weeks after submission will assess students' readiness to
succeed in the unit ahead of the Census date. This is most important for students in the first year
of their degree. If you cannot submit on time, you should contact me at
frances.dilauro@sydney.edu.au (mailto:frances.dilauro@sydney.edu.au) to discuss an extension.
The purpose of this type of assessment
This assessment will help you to start your research and begin the process of writing the
argumentative essay which is due later in the semester. As described on Purdue Owl
(https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/academic_writing/essay_writing/argumentative_essays.h
tml) "The argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires the student to investigate a
topic; collect, generate, and evaluate evidence; and establish a position on the topic in a concise
manner."
This assignment represents the first step in your writing process, a process that will end when you
submit your essay later in the semester.
What do you need to do?
Start researching the topic: Television advertisements continue to impact consumers'
purchasing behaviour in shopping malls.
Deliverables: The Early Feedback Task requires you to research, and find two (2) academic
sources that are relevant to the topic. You should read each critically and think critically about their
arguments. Though you may find other sources that you think may be useful, please only include
the two most suitable ones in this Early Feedback Task.
Research: You are required to use academic sources so we recommend you search the
University of Sydney Library catalogue and refine your search in order to limit results to scholarly
(peer-reviewed) sources. You may also use Google Scholar (not the regular Google). The sources
you choose may be peer-reviewed journal articles or chapters included in scholarly books. Your

marker will provide feedback for this task which you should consider and reflect on before
completing your next assessment.
Choosing the two sources: You must make sure:
each source is credible and has authority to speak on the topic
their thesis (main point) is strongly related to the topic
that you can use it in your essay
You can then write up your submission using the following example as a guide:
Sample Format:
Research Strategy
Source 1: Bibliographic reference and Annotation
Source 2: Bibliographic reference and Annotation
What is a research strategy? You will begin your Annotated bibliography with a heading, then a
brief explanation of your research strategy. It is a general explanation how you went about
finding the source/s, ie the library catalogue you used, keywords, how you decided on the two
sources you chose to use in this assessment or those you excluded (and why). See the sample
above.
The Search Strategy should be approximately 100 words long and is included in the word count.

Next, include a full bibliographic citation (reference) as shown above that is indented and
follows an approved citation style (Chicago, MLA or APA unless your tutor approves another style)
and make clear which one you have chosen). The bibliographic record is NOT included in the
word count.
Annotation: After the bibliographic citation, you will write an annotation that discusses the
credibility and authority of the sources, what these two sources have already written about your
chosen topic, and the extent to which they will help with your own essay. Each annotation should
be approximately 200 words long and should do these four things:
1. state or summarise the author/s’ thesis or main point
2. evaluate the credibility of the author/s (ie her, his or their qualifications/accreditation) and the
publishers of the text
3. evaluate the author/s’ authority to speak on the subject (expertise, specialisation)
4. discuss how the author/s’ contributions to your topic (how and where in your essay you might
be able to use the source.
Using this colour-coding, see below how these four things are expressed in the earlier excerpt:
Each annotation MUST be in your OWN WORDS. DO NOT copy from sources. The combined
Research Strategy explanation and two annotations must amount to approximately 500 words.
The titles, topic and bibliographic references are not included in the word count.
Assessment Criteria:
You will be assessed on:
The use of a research strategy that privileges academic rigour.
Evaluation of the credibility of the author/s (ie her, his or their qualifications/accreditation) and
the publishers of the text; evaluation of the author/s’ authority to speak on the subject
(expertise, specialisation)
The quality of annotations shows care taken in reading, understanding, and thinking critically
about the relevance of sources and content.

Annotations that distill the thesis of each source
Critical judgment shown in choosing academic sources and assessing how they will be used in
the argumentative essay
The inclusion of accurate bibliographic entries for both sources that follow an approved
referencing convention. Written in student's own words.
Other issues that may impact your marks:
Although the purpose of this task is to help you to develop sound and critical research, record
keeping and organisational practices, you should always take care to ensure your work is error-
free grammatically and logically sound, that you follow academic honesty rules and our
instructions.
We won't withhold marks if you make one or two grammatical or spelling mistakes but too many
will impact readability, and your own credibility and might impact your final mark.
We will penalise plagiarism. More serious lapses (e.g. those amounting to negligent or dishonest
plagiarism) must be dealt with at the faculty level.
This assessment cultivates and evaluates some of the University's required graduate qualities
(depth of disciplinary expertise, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication skills, and
information and digital literacy), and two of this unit’s intended learning outcomes, L04 and L05:
LO4. exercise critical judgment in developing an appropriate ‘voice’ and tone for academic
writing assignments in a variety of settings and formats
LO5. evaluate your own work and that written by others, according to specified criteria, in
order to improve not only your writing, but also your critical analysis abilities
