MGH C02 Individual Reflection: Mock Interview Feedback Assignment
Prof. Addo-Bekoe
Overview:
This assignment involves observing 2-3 video recordings of mock interviews for students
in first year coop. The coop students will have provided oral answers to questions
posed during a mock interview. You will play the role of hiring manager and will be
evaluating their performance during the interview. You will be given an evaluation form
to provide feedback to the students whose videos you observed. In addition, you will be
required to reflect on the process of providing feedback and to write an evaluation
about each of the candidates regarding their performance in the interview.
Performance Evaluation:
Please follow the instructions provided through Quercus to access the online recordings
of the interviews.
Written Feedback:
1. Complete the evaluation forms provided by the Coop. Department. for each
candidate (student interviewee). Remember to keep a copy of your responses
as you will need it later for the rest of the assignment.
2. Following the instructions under “Performance Review” below, write a
performance review of 1 of the candidates (student interviewee), explaining
your criteria, your rating, and your comments. This assignment is worth 10% of
your final grade.
Performance Review (45 marks)
This portion of the assignment will be used to grade your skills in providing feedback.
Please write a 1-page performance review of one of the students you evaluated. The
review should include the following:
(i) statement of whether or not you would hire the candidate.
(ii) it should explain your qualitative ratings using behavioural examples
taken from the video (for example, why did you rate as “Strongly Agree”
vs. “Disagree”)?
(iii) it should provide ideas for improvement.
(iv) it should be specific, concrete and include the ratings you provided on
the coop. feedback sheet.
Further, you should use the theories and models in the readings to support your review.
In other words, you want to give the most effective performance review possible, so
apply your knowledge of performance feedback when writing the review of the
student’s mock interview.
2
The performance review is an opportunity to explain to the student why you selected
the ratings for each of the performance criteria. You should use specific examples of
their answers in order to justify the rating and you should explain the standard for
performance (i.e., provide an example of what a perfect score might have sounded like
in a verbal response). This explanation will ensure that your student understands how
their responses were graded and what might have earned them a higher rating on the
evaluation sheet. In addition, you will need to explain how the specific ratings
contributed to an overall sense of whether or not you would want to hire the student. If
you would not hire the student, then you will need to determine whether you would
recommend that they reapply for a subsequent posting, or whether you think much
more work / changes in behavior would be required before you would consider hiring
the student. In other words, you don’t recommend that a person reapply in the future
unless you truly believe you might hire them in the future.
Your performance review should be formatted as you would expect to see one in an
organization. Your name, title, and the students name and address should be included.
These may well need to be created (i.e., fictional) as you don’t have any information
other than whatever detail was shared in the video.
Reflection and Analysis (30 marks):
The following questions are about issues you should address in the reflection of the
evaluation process, however, you may either answer them as questions, or weave your
answers together into an analysis of the whole experience. Be sure to provide specific
and concrete examples of how you evaluated the interview.
Reflecting on my feedback to the candidate (note that all three questions require that
you use the theory and research presented in the readings to support your answers,
the marks will be heavily influenced by your ability to correctly apply this material)
• How did the readings by Canon and Witherspoon (2005) and Silverman et al.
(2005) influence the way in which you wrote the letter to inform the candidate
of the decision?
• How do you think you might use the theory and research to guide your own
acceptance of criticism related to your evaluation skills?
• Gorbatov and Lane (2018) suggest that managers can make feedback a good
investment. Choose two points from this section of the article and discuss how
you made your feedback effective to the student in your letter.
Your paper should be 3 pages (max), typed, be not less than 12 point font, single-
spaced, on 8.5 x11” paper, with 1” margins on all sides and stapled. APA format for
references. Submit on Quercus.
