SUBMISSION QUESTION GUIDE
The purpose of Submission Questions is to cover the core principles of a topic and to
provide some practice in applying the principles for analysis of economic issues.
Submission Questions are separate items of assessment; they account for 20 percent
of your course grade. (You can earn another 10 percent through active participation and
regular attendance in your tutorial; see section “Assessment Structure” in the course
outline.) The precise breakdown will be explained below.
Submission Questions are in addition to the regularly assigned exercises and review
questions of various kinds that are mainly based on the text book and the lectures. Your
knowledge of the material covered in textbook and lectures will be assessed through
mid-term and final exams, as detailed in the course outline.
In the second week (the first tutorial week), you will be placed in a team of 3 - 5 course
participants who are also attending the same tutorial. These placements can be
petitioned only with good cause. Having a friend in another team is not a good reason.
You and your team will have to present the answer to the Submission Question(s) that
your team will be given in your allocated tutorial week. Students allocated to a question
will be required to lead the discussion with an oral presentation of their planned answer,
in the tutorial of the week of your question. Your presentation should last about 15
minutes. Submission questions, starting in week 2, will be given during the lecture for in-
tutorial presentation the following week. Everyone in a tutorial is expected to have
answered all the submission questions. Also, every member in the team should present
a part of the answer to the submission question.
In addition to the oral presentation, your team will be required to submit (one) written
answer to your allocated question(s) the week after your oral presentation (in your
tutorial class). Your written answer should contain about 1,000 words. The purpose of
the oral presentation (in the tutorial) is to allow you to incorporate useful comments from
other students in the tutorial for your written answer.
Your written answer must be typed. Where appropriate you should include diagrams
and you must acknowledge sources and references. Your written answer has to be
attached to the signed Assignment Cover Sheet and submitted by the due date (in the
tutorial one week after the discussion in the tutorial where applicable). Students must
also submit an electronic copy of their Submission Question. The electronic copy is to
be submitted to the Moodle course website by 11:59 pm on the day in which you are
required to hand in your report to your tutor. Instructions will be available on the
website. Browse and upload a copy of your document – do not paste text. The student
IDs of all team members must be clearly listed on the electronic copy (and the
Assignment Cover Sheet).

Submission will be checked for plagiarism via a plagiarism detection program. See
notes on Plagiarism in the Course Outline. Note that the detection program will also
automatically check your assignment against all other current assignments submitted.
The detection program will also check your assignment against assignments which
have been submitted in previous semesters. Recall that before you submit a written
assignment you have to complete the “Working with Academic Integrity” module
on your Moodle site, as specified in the Course Outline. Make a screenshot that
documents that you completed the module and attach it to your submission.
If either the hard copy or the electronic copy of the assignment is not received by the
due date you will receive a mark of zero unless a suitable medical certificate (or
equivalent) is provided. Please send this to the Lecturer-In-Charge (LIC).
This assessment accounts for 20% of your grade. 10% will go to the oral presentation
and the final write-up each. (You can earn up to another 10 percent through active
participation in your tutorial.)
As a general rule, every member of the team will get the same grade for oral
presentation and final write-up, unless there are obvious reasons to differentiate (i.e.
one team member not participating in the oral presentation, or presenting her or his part
poorly.) The grade will be assigned by the respective tutor. Attempts will be made
ensure that average grades across the different tutorials are similar.
