Instructions and Advice
This assessment task is an opportunity for you to expand your knowledge of significant Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander people and events in Australian history.
Research and write two short reports: one on a person (900 words) and one on an event (900
words) selected from the lists below. Your reports should not be written in essay style (with an
introduction, body and conclusion). Instead, they should simply be informative paragraphs about
your chosen person and event, each followed by an explanation of their significance to Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander peoples and to Australian society more broadly.
People: Bennelong, Patyegarang, Pemulwuy, Wyndradyne, Yagan, Jandamarra, David Unaipon, Pearl
Gibbs, Sir Douglas Nicholls, Vincent Lingiari, Neville Bonner, Charles Perkins, Eddie Mabo, Evelyn
Scott, Mervyn Bishop, Linda Burney, Sally Morgan, Rachel Perkins, Cathy Freeman, Adam Goodes,
Wesley Enoch, Jessica Mauboy.
Events: 1938 Day of Mourning, 1963 Yirrkala bark petitions, 1965 Freedom Rides, 1966 Gurinji Walk-
off, 1967 Referendum, 1972 Aboriginal tent embassy in Canberra, 1988 Bicentennial Celebrations,
1992 Redfern Park Speech, 2000 Corroboree Harbour Bridge Reconciliation Walk, 2017 Uluru
Statement from the Heart, NAIDOC, NSW Koori Rugby League Knockout Carnival, Yabun Festival.
References: Each report must be informed by 3-4 academic/formal sources, i.e. books, book
chapters, journal articles, documentary films and podcasts. In addition, you can refer to 3-4 sources
that are less academic in nature, as long as they are reliable and trustworthy, e.g. credible websites,
news articles. The University of Sydney Library APA7 guide shows how to refer to various less
academic/formal sources: https://libguides.library.usyd.edu.au/citation/apa7
Always use capital letters for the terms: Indigenous, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.
Double-spaced text and wide margins make your assignment much easier for your marker to read.
