Digital Asset and Media Management
in the Broadcast Media
MODULE ASSIGNMENT ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/24
Choose ONE essay (from two titles) OR the report assignment detailed below.
ESSAY
Title 1
“Technology is the most important factor in the successful management of digital assets in
the broadcast Media”. Discuss this claim, supporting your argument with examples from the
contemporary industry.
Or
Title 2
What are the most pressing issues facing digital asset and media management (DAMM) in
broadcasting today? Use case studies and industry examples to illustrate your points.
Notes
You are asked to write an essay of 4,000 words on one of these questions, supporting your
argument with concrete examples whenever possible. Be sure to discuss both sides of the
argument before reaching your conclusion, and take care to cite all references carefully to
avoid any possibility of inadvertent plagiarism.
Marking Criteria
The major criteria are:
● The essay should present a coherent and tightly argued examination of the issues
raised in the question which critically engages with some core literature on the
subject; it will be assessed on:-
○ the quality of the argument presented
○ the relevance of the evidence used to support it
○ the extent to which it is placed in the context of the literature on the subject
and the manner in which it critically engages with it
○ its conformance to the word limit of 4000 words.
Secondary considerations are:
● The essay should be written in clear and correct English
● The essay should be attractively presented with correct bibliographic references for all
cited materials. Note the bibliography does not form part of the 4000 word limit for this essay.
Or you can write a report…
REPORT
Scenario
You have been commissioned to produce a report for an existing, or imaginary broadcaster,
which describes the strategic value of digital asset and media management (DAMM) for
them. Your report should include the benefits, shortcomings and recommendations for the
broadcaster, with examples and supporting evidence from industry and academia. It should
be structured and clearly laid-out, focusing on the presentation of information obtained from
your research and readings.
This type of report would normally include financial implications, in this situation you do not
need to explore these in depth, however your proposals need to be realistic and achievable.
Assume that you are writing for company directors. You are trying to make an evidence
based persuasive case for your strategy to address the scenario provided.
Notes
This project report should be 4,000 words long.
You should provide specific details about the scenario being addressed.
For departmental guidelines on presentation, referencing, word counts please see
https://internal.kcl.ac.uk/artshums/students/handbooks/academicassess/assessment/index .
Writing a Report
Please note that this assignment should take the form of a report rather than an essay.
Assume that you are writing for an informed manager rather than for an academic audience.
However, you are still expected to be critical and to provide the manager with a clear
overview of both the opportunities and the risks involved. You are trying to make an
evidence-based persuasive case for your strategy.
Please note the following in this regard:
● A report is a very structured document, with good sub-headings to direct the reader.
● Use an Executive Summary to summarise your strategy in a very short form at the
beginning of the work.
● Provide a set of Recommendations that summarise the actions that the strategy
suggests be taken.
● Be evidence-based and build upon a clear strategic focus.
● Your ideas must be clear, concise and relate to the scenario.
● You are not writing a philosophical or descriptive piece of work. Your writing should
focus on your ideas, how you will address the scenario, and what success would look
like if your ideas were agreed to.
● You may use bullet points, graphs, tables, graphics and other visualisation means to
illustrate your work. Words in graphics will not count to your total word count.
However, unnecessary graphics that do not appear to serve a purpose by amplifying
or simplifying the understanding of the reader will be ignored or downgraded.
Marking Criteria:
The major criteria are:
● The quality of the analysis of the background and context.
● The quality of the decisions you make, based on your understanding of digital asset
management in the broadcast industries and your analysis of the
background/context.
● The coherence of the proposed strategy.
● The quality of your analysis of the anticipated benefits and risks for the broadcaster.
● The clarity of the presentation, including the use of judicious examples to enhance
this presentation where appropriate.
● Conformance to the word limit of 4000 words.
Secondary considerations are:
● The report should be written in clear and correct English
● The report should aim for concision and relevance to the analysis throughout.
Reassessment: same questions and mode of assessment used.
