A. Guidance on Academic Integrity for Test/Examination assessments
Note on Academic Integrity
Academic integrity means that a student’s work at Curtin should be completed by that student with integrity. Integrity is to
act ethically, honestly and with fairness.
Academic integrity links directly to professional integrity – if you cheat as a student, then you are also likely to act
unethically, dishonestly, or unfairly as a professional.
Curtin’s Student Charter sets out responsibilities and expectations regarding student behaviour:
https://students.curtin.edu.au/essentials/rights/student-charter/
As a student, you are expected to inform yourself of, and comply with, all relevant laws, statutes, rules and by-laws, the
University’s values and ethical behaviours, and policies and procedures relating to their rights as a student.
As a student, you must recognise that cheating, plagiarism and fabrication or falsifications of data are not acceptable and
must adhere to the proper use of copyright material.
Resources about academic integrity are available at: https://students.curtin.edu.au/essentials/rights/academic-integrity/
If you have questions about whether academic integrity in relation to a particular assessment, please raise these questions
with your Unit Coordinator.
It is ok to be unsure as to whether particular conduct is unfair or dishonest – however, it is your responsibility to
contact the Unit Coordinator or other university staff member to ask before you engage in that conduct.

Note on Plagiarism
Plagiarism is one form of academic misconduct. Plagiarism is defined as “presenting the work or property of another person
as your own without appropriate acknowledgement or referencing”.
The Curtin University rules on plagiarism apply to all open book assessments.
You should not copy-paste text into your test/examination answers, even if the material is provided to you as part of the
unit (e.g. lecture notes or cases).
All of your answers should be paraphrased (written in your own words).
Failure to comply with these instructions may result in a reduced mark and/or an academic misconduct investigation.
All take-home exams are submitted via Turnitin and a Similarity Report will be generated.
Note on Contract Cheating
Contract cheating can be defined as submitting written or creative work which has been drafted or produced by someone
else – including classmates, friends, family, paid contracting services and study help websites - and claiming authorship for
it.
You are at risk of contract cheating if, among other things, you ask someone to:
 Complete an assignment (or part of an assignment) for you
 Substantially edit your assignment
 Do your university work, with or without compensation
 Check test or quiz answers
 Sit a test or quiz for you
 Provide someone with your login details
Contract cheating is considered academic misconduct.
Curtin’s ability to detect contract cheating is continuously improving through technological advancement and staff
training. The University is aware of websites where exam/assignment questions from Curtin University assessments have
been posted. The University has contacted the providers of some websites to request that the providers take materials
down and to disclose the details of persons who have uploaded exam/assignment questions from a Curtin University
assessment.
Please have a careful read of the University’s contract cheating webpage:
https://students.curtin.edu.au/essentials/rights/academic-integrity/contract-cheating/
