Presentation Topic and Other Information
Total Marks: 20%
Presentation Due: Tuesday May 7, Week 11 Sem 1 2024, (In-class)
Tuesday May 7, 12 pm, Week 11 Sem 1 2024 (Pre-recorded)
Topic of Presentation:
In recent decades, the global economy has experienced unprecedented levels of integration, driven
by the forces of globalization. This interconnectedness has extended to the financial sector, where
banking and finance systems across nations have become increasingly intertwined and
interdependent. While financial globalization has facilitated the flow of capital and fostered
economic development on a global scale, events like the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) have
underscored the potential risks and unintended consequences of this phenomenon. The GFC
revealed the vulnerabilities of a highly interconnected financial system, highlighting the need for
enhanced regulation, oversight, and international cooperation to safeguard against systemic risks.
During the GFC, the banking sector bore the greatest impact, facing widespread failure and
significant challenges for recovery.
For your presentation, you will choose an investment bank, commercial bank or the banking sector
in any country and analyse:
• The operative performance of the Bank(s) in the pre GFC period.
• How financial globalisation affected the bank(s) in the lead-up to the GFC. In particular,
consider how the banks’ business operation model, impact of Basel framework (if any) and
other factors paved the way towards the crisis.
• What safeguard mechanism were in place and how they worked or didn’t work for the
bank(s).
• How the bank(s) sustained themselves in the post-GFC period, including the role of Basel
framework, central banks, IMF or the government bailout, if applicable.
Formatting Guideline and Other information:
You will need to present using MS PowerPoint or any other software used for presentation
purposes. In all cases, whether you are presenting on-campus or prerecording, you will have to
submit your presentation slides in the designated folder. The total time for each presentation will
be strictly limited to 5 minutes.
If you are using text and references in your presentation slides, use Harvard referencing style
throughout.

The presentation can be done either on-campus during the seminar time of Week 11 or online as
an uploaded pre-recorded video. If you choose to present on-campus, you do not need to submit
any pre-recorded video, and vice versa. A separate folder in the Ed discussion has been created for
those intending to present on-campus. You can put your name in that discussion thread.
A maximum of 35 students will be allowed to present on-campus due to time constraints, and this
allocation will be made on a first-come, first-served basis based on your message posted inside the
relevant discussion thread. If the cutoff point of 35 students is met, all other students will
automatically present online by submitting their prerecorded videos. However, your choice of
presentation on-campus or online will be unaffected if the number of students intending to present
on-campus is less than 35.
For data on banking, you can use bank specific annual report, central bank report and databases,
Bank of international settlement (BIS) database (Website:
https://www.bis.org/statistics/index.htm), Statista (https://www.statista.com), International
Financial Statistics (IFS) (https://data.imf.org/?sk=4c514d48-b6ba-49ed-8ab9-52b0c1a0179b) and World
Bank Data.
