DPBS1120 Week 1 Workshop Activities – The Innovation & Creativity
Context
Double Diamond: DISCOVER THE PROBLEM
Discover (Divergent Thinking). The first diamond helps students understand, rather than simply
assume, what the problem is.
Divergent thinking: to encourage students to think broadly about problems and to keep an open
mind when considering solutions.
Student Journey
Workshop Purpose & Learning Objectives
The purpose of this workshop is to understand course structure in terms of double diamond
(DD) framework, to understand innovation as being different to creativity and to explore the
innovation process along with their role in it.
In this workshop, you will work with the DD:
1. in context of their own experience
2. in context of a business case
3. in context of assessment task 1a: goal setting
You will produce content relevant for assessment 1a, part 1: self-assessment on innovation
skills.
Course Introduction (10 minutes)
Your facilitator will introduce to you the course:

• Course outline
• Assessments
Activity: Double Diamond Framework (1 hour)
Your facilitator will introduce to you the Double Diamond Framework. You will use the Double
Diamond Framework to get to know your classmates.
Activity: Creativity v Innovation (1 hour)
Watch the week 1 lecture videos and consider:
1. To what extent is creativity different from innovation?
2. Why is Netflix a successful innovation?
3. Why is Google glass an example of a failed innovation?
Activity: Process Innovation (40 minutes)
In small groups, think of a process you do regularly. Write down the steps to complete this
process. Then, while discussing with your group, see if you can eliminate or improve the steps
to be more creative and innovative.
Your facilitator will provide you with a shared document for your notes.
Assessment 1a Goal Setting PART 1 (10 minutes)
Your facilitator will introduce to you Assessment 1a - individual, due at end of 2nd week
Part 1: Self-assessment on innovation skills (200 words)
1. Your understanding of innovation in the context of your skillset?
2. Your comfort zone and discomfort on the double diamond and why?
3. Your views on the DD as an innovation process?
