Assessment description
For this report, you will identify an integrity agency that is active in the Australian policy
context at the federal or state level, investigate its role and processes and evaluate its
effectiveness.
Audience:
Your report should be written for a non-academic audience with an interest in
administrative law, for example a government agency or a non-government organisation.
Information sources:
You should take into account information that is published on the agency’s own website,
including records of recent reviews, decisions, or advice. You should note any legislation
that guides the agency’s remit and operations. You should also consider commentary on the
agency’s operation in the media, and in parliament, as well as analysis by academic and
expert observers.
Evaluation criteria:
You should clearly identify your evaluation criteria.
Consider the different evaluation criteria that are applied in the course in the weekly
seminar topics and readings. For useful discussion on a range of approaches to evaluating
integrity agencies, see the articles in the Integrity Symposium published in Australian
Journal of Public Administration Vol 64 No 2 (June 2005).
You should consider your chosen agency as part of a larger integrity system.
Structure and format:
Your report should include the following components:
• title page
• table of contents
• abstract or executive summary (150 words)
• body of the report: introduction, discussion, conclusion and recommendations
(maximum 1500 words)
• references
• appendices (if required)
Referencing:
You should apply the SOSS Referencing Guide (in-text citations) and provide a full reference
list.
Learning Outcomes Assessed
CLO2 : Investigate the role and processes of the key accountability mechanisms at work in
the Australian political system.
CLO4 : Evaluate the effectiveness of accountability mechanisms with respect to the
marketisation of government service delivery and the shift to governance.
Acceptable Use of AI
As this assessment task involves some planning or creative processes, you are permitted to use
software to generate initial ideas and/or a structure for your draft. However, you must develop or
edit those ideas to such a significant extent that what is submitted is your own work, i.e., what is
generated by the software should not be a part of your final submission. In this assessment, you will
be marked on the originality/creativity of your analysis, writing and use of examples (see rubric).
Please note that your submission will be passed through an AI-text detection tool. If your marker
has concerns that your answer contains passages of AI-generated text that have not been sufficiently
modified you may be asked to explain your work, but we recognise that you are permitted to use AI
generated text as a starting point and some traces may remain. If you are unable to satisfactorily
demonstrate your understanding of your submission you may be referred to UNSW Conduct &
Integrity Office for investigation for academic misconduct and possible penalties. It is a good idea to
keep copies of your initial drafts to show your lecturer if there is any uncertainty about the
originality of your work.
Assessment Instructions
Submit your assessment via the Turnitin link on Moodle (in Assessment Hub). You will be able to
view your Turnitin originality report and modify your assessment (resubmit) if necessary. If your
originality report shows a similarity rating in the ‘red zone’, this indicates you may have plagiarised
your own or others’ work, and you may be referred to the Academic Integrity Office for further
investigation and follow up. To prevent this, please ensure your originality report has a similarity
rating under 40%.
Note: Resubmitted papers may not generate a new Similarity Report for a full 24 hours. This delay is
automatic and allows resubmissions to correctly generate without matching to the previous draft.
Please ensure you leave enough time (24 hours +) to check your similarity rating and resubmit if
necessary. Please note a 3-day automatic Short Extension without documentation is available for
this assessment. You can apply by accessing the Short Extension Student Portal on the Special
Consideration login page
