This assignment asks you to engage with theory related to adaptation and/or Dracula to
produce a pitch for your own creative adaptation of the novel. The standard form of this
assignment is a 5-7 page paper that draws upon a minimum of two secondary
sources (from the course syllabus or elsewhere), as well as the source material
(Stoker or adaptations), to support your approach.

The basic assumption of this assignment is that you are pitching a film adaptation of the
novel, but other media forms [TV, stage play, radio drama, animation, video games,
podcast, online media, etc.] are welcome as long as you describe the reasons for
choosing a different form. You should support your approach with a detailed
description of how you would adapt at least one sequence/scene from the novel.

The purpose of this assignment is to find a particular angle for how you would adapt the
text and describe said angle in detail with reference to your secondary texts. The nature
or approach of this angle is totally open and up to you, but might include, for example:

● Your pitch should be supported by a minimum of 2 secondary sources. You may
draw from the syllabus or do your own research. Your sources will necessarily
reflect your approach. For example, if you are primarily concerned with character,
you might draw upon syllabus readings from July 4, along with sources about
star personas, celebrity, or character in Stoker’s novel. A pitch seeking to
emphasize the novel’s Queer subtext, on the other hand, might utilize broader
Queer theory along with sources discussing Queer representation in Stoker
specifically.

● In lieu of a 5-7 page paper, you have the option to produce a creative work. This
may take the form of a screenplay, a short film or video, visual essay/artwork,
short story, or any other creative adaptation idea you can come up with. If you
would like to explore this option, please discuss it with me so I can ensure your
idea is a sufficient replacement for a 5-7 page paper with sources.
