Course aim
The course will introduce you to various principles of user interface design and user experience.
Purpose
Provides students with the understanding of the Principles involved in designing interfaces that are
attractive, easy to use and meet the needs of different users.
Assessment Information
1. This is an individual open-book assessment which is worth 20% of your total assessment
weighting of the entire course.
2. Resources and/or equipment which may be used for this activity:
a. NZSE issued material; and
b. your own course notes.
3. There is 1 task on this assessment. You have 7 days to complete this assessment.
4. Up to 15% of the content may be quoted or paraphrased from other sources provided you
acknowledge and cite the original source of the material you use. Use APA 6th edition
referencing on all quoted or paraphrased material.
5. Late assessments will incur a penalty of 5% per day (unless an extension is granted before the
due date). Any assessment received later than 7 days after the due date will not be marked.
6. Unless otherwise specified, all documents are to be produced following NZSE standards. These
are: Normal font is Calibri, size 12 point for the body of all documents with the text fully
justified. Headings should not exceed 16 points in size except on a title page where larger
fonts are appropriate for the title of a report. Documents should use 1.15 spacing within a

paragraph and have a space between paragraphs. Footers should be created on the report
that includes a page number.

Scenario
You are currently working for an IT retail company based in Hamilton, New Zealand. The company
wants to upgrade the way they showcase their products by improving their user experience and
interface. You have been tasked by your manager to do a research and produce a report on user
experience and interface.
Task 1 (100 Marks)
You are required to write a report consisting of 1500 words (±150).
Include the following in the report:
• define and explain HCI and User Experience (UX)
• discuss 3 similarities and 3 differences between HCI and UX and
• explain how the underlying principles and guidelines of HCI, helps enhancing the HCI design
and user experience. Use the following as a guide:
o provide 4 principles with 2 examples each on how they enhance User Experience and
o provide 4 guidelines with 2 examples each on how they enhance User Experience.
Report Requirements
Use different sources such as scholarly journal articles (use Google scholar to locate these), IT news
sources such as Computerworld, and web pages from reliable sites.
1. The written report for presenting your research needs to have a formal structure. A
supplementary information is provided at the end of this assessment for your reference. The
following need to be included in the report:

3. Sections and pages will need to be numbered appropriately and contain well written
paragraphs that successfully communicate your ideas to the reader using succinct and
professional language. It is strongly recommended that automatic page numbering,
section headings and table of contents features in an appropriate word processor be used
when preparing the report. Remember you must provide in-text citations throughout
your report as well as including the references at the end of your report. Reports
submitted that do not contain the required sections and appropriate numbering of
sections and pages are unlikely to score highly when assessed.
4. All information is to be in your own words and not copied from the handouts, textbook,
or other web pages. If a student fails to provide appropriate references, then the work
will not be considered of an appropriate academic standard and may not be marked.
