Assessment Description
Rationale
Being an online-only course has some advantages (e.g. you can go through the material at your own pace, at
a time that suits you), but it also has some disadvantages. One disadvantage is that it is difficult to build a
sense of being part of a learning community. To address this disadvantage the Climate Conundrums
Discussion Forum is available each week to discuss topics relevant to that weeks material. By engaging with
the Forum on a regular basis you will find that there are a multitude of opinions and possible actions when it
comes to dealing with climate risk. In some cases we find "wicked" problems for which there does not
appear to be any good solution. I strongly encourage you to engage with the forum (myself and other tutors
will too) and note that participation in the forum is worth 20% of your final mark.
Task description
The discussion forum participation mark is based on your engagement in online discussions in Moodle.
Marks are not awarded for knowing a lot about a topic nor are they lost for being wrong about anything in
particular. Students who constructively and critically engage in discussions throughout the course can expect
to receive a full mark. Students are required to submit a collection of posts in the middle and at the end of
the course to be assessed. Instructions and a detailed marking rubric that shows how marks are given is
provided below.
Submission details
Towards the end of the week 5 (covering weeks 1-5) and week 10 (covering weeks 7-10), make a single
submission containing examples of your contributions to be assessed by staff. Submit the URL of your posts
(i.e. click on and copy the “Permalink” of your posts). For example
Do NOT post the actual text of your contributions. To add examples of your contributions, click on the
'Comments' link below, paste the URLs of your contribution to the discussion, and save. Be sure to hit the
"Add Submission" button once you are ready to submit the assessment. Then check the "For Individual
Assignment" check box, write "See comments" in the "Online text" box, and save your submission.
Resources
To receive full marks for this assessment you should engage with the discussion forum each week. Both
writing your own original posts and responding to the posts of others. In each half of the course you will
need enough posts of the right variety to satisfy all components of the marking rubric below.
