Task Description

Using the intellectual and research strategies outlined by the concept ‘Asia as method’
develop and compose a research paper to answer one of the questions listed below.
These questions were discussed in the course from weeks 3-9.
Research Questions will appear here at the start
Of Week 5, 7th October 2024 at 9am
Your research paper should be focused on a case study of media relevant to your
selected question. In answering the question, you MUST apply the concepts and
techniques of ‘Asia as method’ and Inter-Asian referencing to critically analyze and ‘de-
Westernize’ our understanding of media from the Asia-Pacific region. Your research
should explore the theories and concepts discussed in the classes and readings from this
course during the week that you selected. Additionally, you must research and utilize
other relevant academic literature to critically analyze the trends and issues involved with
your topic and support your arguments. Make sure you connect to the issues we identified
as being important for this topic in this course!
Assessment Criteria:
o Demonstrate a deep understanding of the core arguments and concepts from
lectures and readings from the course
o Demonstrate an ability to apply academic theory and concepts in the critical
analysis of a specific example of media from the Asia-Pacific
o Be able to express your ideas clearly in writing in a manner that engages the
reader and presents a rigorous argument in your response to the selected
research question
o Be able to reference your ideas using the UNSW Harvard in-text referencing
style (https://www.student.unsw.edu.au/harvard-referencing)

Submission of Assessment Tasks
All written assignments need to be submitted to Turnitin on the course Moodle site.
You must submit written work in 12-point font, double spaced and paginated. Do keep
an electronic and hard copy for yourself.
If you have any problems submitting via Turnitin, send your Convener a word doc or
pdf version of your assignment immediately together with an explanation of the
problem you are encountering. You should then follow the protocol outlined at the
following site:

http://teaching.unsw.edu.au/moodle-students-help
Advice about whom to contact is given when you log into Moodle. Such advice includes
the following:
If you have trouble logging in, or you cannot see your course once you log in, please
contact the IT Service Centre for assistance.
For enrolment and login issues contact:
IT Service Centre Email:
itservicecentre@unsw.edu.au Internal: x51333
External: (02) 9385 1333
International: +61 2 9385 1333

Please do not send your Course Conveners a copy of your assignment unless
you are unable to submit via Turnitin. Once you have submitted, you will receive a
receipt to confirm that you have successfully submitted. Keep this receipt as proof
of the date and time that you lodged your assignment. If you do not receive
such notification, you must ask your Convenor, by email, to check whether your
upload was successful.

Please also note that there is no submitting “the wrong file”. The assignment you
submit will be what gets marked. This means you are responsible for checking it. Prior
to the due date and time passing (even if you are not ready to submit) you should clear
the turnitin box of any previous submissions you do not wish to be marked. Turnitin will
lock in whatever you have submitted once the due time passes and you can no longer
change this. This includes anything you submit after the due time passes. You will not
be able to change your late submission once the due time passes.

As you are submitting your assignment you should read the popup screen that
displays what you are submitting to ensure you are submitting the correct file. After the
digital receipt arrives you should open it to check what you have submitted again. If
you are rushing around and writing and submitting right up until the deadline you
should probably go back into the Moodle turnitin submission box to open your paper
and check it again for a third time (even though it is now 12am!). You are responsible
for submitting the correct file and all relevant late penalties will apply.
You should also be aware that when you submit a UNSW course assignment
online, through a facility such as Turnitin, you are automatically acknowledging
that you have understood and abided by the University requirements in respect
of student academic misconduct outlined in the Student Code Policy and Student
Misconduct Procedures, both of which are available at
https://student.unsw.edu.au/conduct
You are declaring that the assessment is your own work, except where acknowledged,
and has not been submitted for academic credit previously in whole or in part. In
addition, you are declaring that the assessor of this item may, for assessment
purposes:

• Provide a copy to another staff member of the University

• Communicate a copy of this assessment item to a plagiarism checking service (such
as Turnitin) which may then retain a copy of the assessment item on its database for
the purpose of future plagiarism checking.
Please be aware that the unauthorized and unacknowledged use of artificial
intelligence is a form of academic misconduct and could lead to academic penalties
that result in a zero on this assignment and failure in the course. For this task, you
are only permitted to use AI for light editing and translation.
