The following exercises must be completed by uploading a PDF document onto Quercus. These exercises
cover material through theThursday October 3 lecture.
Remember: These problems are designed tomake you think critically and to applywhat you have learned
this last week to new issues. These problems will be discussed in the following lecture, after this practice
exercise is due. The exact same problems may appear on your assignments at the end of the month, so do
your best, and take good note of the solutions presented in lecture.

1 Presuppositions
Below you are presented with a number of sentences. Each of these sentences has several presuppositions.
For each sentence below, (1) identify at least two of these presuppositions, (2) identify or describe what
triggers each presupposition, and (3) perform the “Hey, wait a minute” test, along with one projection test,
describe the results of these two tests, and say how they show that the inferences you identified are presup-
positions.
(1) Luckily, your uncle forgot that we owe him $300.
(2) The coffee machine I got at Value Village still makes great espresso, even though it’s a bit old.
(3) For the last time, it’s just the door at the end of the hall that will trigger the emergency alarm.
(4) I like the restaurant on the corner of my street somuch that I’mwilling to ignore the fact that they don’t
pass health inspections.
(5) I swear I’ll quit going to the gym if they raise their freaking prices again.
