CHNS 2614 UNDERSTANDING NEWS ABOUT CHINA
News comparison critique (35% of unit assessment), S2 2024
You must complete all assignments to pass the unit.
Description
The “news comparison critique” assignment requires students to apply the news frame analysis
methods discussed in the unit to evaluate, develop, and supplement a news frame comparison report
made by a selected AI tool. It requires submission of two components:
(1) a comparison report of the news frames by an AI tool as an appendix and
(2) your critique of AI’s news comparison report.
Deadline 11:59 pm, November 11 (Monday)
Word length
• A maximum of 1,800 words. There is no allowance for exceeding the word limit.
• The word count includes every word in your submission file, including the topic and in-text
citations, but excludes the reference list, the AI comparison report, and the declaration on AI
usage.
• Marks will be deducted pro-rata for overrun of word length. For example, a submission of 2,000
words exceeds the maximum limit by 200 words; 10% (200/2000X100%) of the total marks of
this assignment will be deducted.
Submission
• A file (docx or doc–not pdf) submitted to Canvas - Assignments – News comparison critique
The task
1) Analyse and compare the news framing in the two articles below, using the methods discussed in
this unit and based on the four dimensions identified by Pan and Kosicki (1993).
2) Select an AI tool to conduct the news framing analysis and comparison.
3) Send the two news articles to the AI tool, one at a time, and prompt it to analyse the framing in
each using the methods discussed in the unit. Then, ask the AI tool to compare the two frames.
Specifically:
(a) Your prompts should be informed by the four dimensions of news discourse (Pan & Kosicki,
1993).
(b) Your prompts should also ask for an overall news frame for each article.
4) Evaluate and critique the AI-generated report based on your own analysis and comparison. In your
critique:
(a) Include evidence in the form of direct quotations from the two articles and the AI's responses to
support your points.
(b) Additionally, include appropriate citations when borrowing ideas from academic sources you
have read. For each in-text citation, include a cropped image of the relevant part of the cited source
as supporting visual evidence.
(c) Also, include a reference list of the cited works at the end of your critique. Do not include any
item in the reference list that is not cited in-text. Please note that the teaching PowerPoints are not
citable sources. You should instead read and cite the sources referenced in the PowerPoints. In-text
citations and references should follow APA 7th referencing style.
(d) Copy and paste screenshots of the entire conversation record with the AI tool into your file as an
appendix.

Academic honesty
You are required to write the critique yourself. Submitting a piece written by someone else or
generated by artificial intelligence (AI) tools is not acceptable and will be reported to the Faculty’s
Educational Integrity unit as contract cheating.
In this assignment, you may use AI tools to analyse and compare the news frames of the two
news articles and suggest readability improvements to your writing in terms of grammar and
expression. Use of AI tools directly for any other purpose in this assignment is not permitted. Note
that using AI to translate a piece written by yourself in another language into English is also not
permitted.
Use of AI tools must be appropriately acknowledged. You can do this by inserting a note
following this example at the end of your document:
“I acknowledge the use of ChatGPT (https://chat.openai.com/) to analyse and compare the news
articles and the use of Grammarly (https://www.grammarly.com) to refine the language of the critique
report I wrote.”
The acknowledgement does not count towards your word count.
