UGEB2791 Perspectives in Clinical Sciences (3 Units)
Course Assignment (2024/25)
1. Essay assessment scheme
• An essay assignment encourages students to develop critical thinking abilities and assesses their
comprehension of the lecture topics.
• This essay assignment constitutes 30% of the course assessment.
2. Essay topics
Students are required to select 1 specific topic from the 12 following topics to write up an essay.
1. Abortion after prenatal testing is acceptable to avoid disabilities. Agree or not?
2. Common eye diseases in Hong Kong.
3. Induced pluripotent stem cells: applications & potential challenges.
4. Immunity is important in maintaining good health. Discuss the ways in which we can bolster our
body’s immunity.
5. Discuss the major health problems associated with obesity in adults.
6. Discuss the causes, treatment, and prevention of peptic ulcers.
7. The COVID-19 pandemic.
8. Major obstacles of anti-cancer drug development.
9. AIDS epidemic in China.
10. Explain why osteoporosis is a common medical problem in old women. What can be done to reduce
the incidence of osteoporosis?
11. What are the causes of gouty arthritis? What are the dietary recommendations for people with gouty
arthritis?
12. Alzheimer’s disease in Hong Kong.

3. Essay requirements
• Word count: no more than 1000 words.
• Topic: 1 specific topic selected from the 12 essay topics listed above.
• Content: integration of the knowledge learnt from lectures with online resources (e.g. scientific articles,
website information etc.)* and students’ own views.
• Application of AI tools: as a general principle of CUHK, students are prohibited from using any AI tools
to complete their assignments that count towards their final grade of the course.
* Information from online public domain should be judged, verified, and properly cited.
4. Essay submission instruction
Soft copy submission instruction
• The soft copy should be submitted to the plagiarism & AI index detection engine VeriGuide:
o website: https://academic2.veriguide.org/portalcuhk/
o editions: VeriGuide 2020 / VeriGuide Express.
• After VeriGuide online submission, the system will generate a receipt which should be properly signed.
• Only the final version of the assignment should be submitted to VeriGuide.
• Filename format: Year - Essay topic No. - Student name.docx
o e.g. 2024 - 01 - CHAN Tai Man.docx.
Hard copy submission instruction
• Hard copy includes: a cover page, the essay, and a signed VeriGuide receipt.
• Cover page includes: essay title, student name, and student ID.
• Essay submission box location: outside of Room 610, 6F, Choh-ming Li Basic Medical Sciences
Building, CUHK Campus.
• Submission deadline: on / before 6 Dec, 2024, 5:00 p.m.
• Late submission: 5% of marks will be deducted every day for late submission.
• Special reminder: the essay will not be marked if students miss submitting the soft copy / hard copy /
signed VeriGuide receipt.
5. Academic honesty
• Attention is drawn to University policy and regulations on honesty in academic work, and to the
disciplinary guidelines and procedures applicable to breaches of such policy and regulations. Details
may be found at http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/policy/academichonesty/.

• With each assignment, students will be required to submit a signed declaration that they are aware of these
policies, regulations, guidelines and procedures.
• For assignments in the form of a computer-generated document that is principally text-based and
submitted via VeriGuide, the statement, in the form of a receipt, will be issued by the system upon
students' uploading of the soft copy of the assignment.
• The submission of a piece of work, or a part of a piece of work, for more than one purpose (e.g. to satisfy
the requirements in 2 different courses) without declaration to this effect shall be regarded as having
committed undeclared multiple submissions. It is common and acceptable to reuse a turn of phrase or a
sentence or two from one’s own work; but wholesale reuse is problematic. In any case, agreement from
the course teacher(s) concerned should be obtained prior to the submission of the piece of work.
• As a general principle of CUHK, students are prohibited from using any AI tools to complete their
assignments, assessments and any other works that count towards their final grade of the course or
attainment of the desired learning outcomes, unless explicitly permitted.
