Case Study 1
Task Description: Effective product sustainability labels
Individually prepare 2 A4 pages reflecting / critiquing 2 product sustainability labels and
submit prior to class.
During class prepare 2 A4 pages on how changes could be made to 3 of the product labels to
improve sustainability outcomes combined with others in your team submitted by end of
class.
Interaction between team members during class are also assessed as per the marking rubric
below.
Key details to include:
A photo of two product sustainability labels
Describe the features of the sustainability labels.
As a consumer, explain how you perceive the sustainability of the products based on the
labels.
Explain what you think is good or bad about the sustainability labels related to
communicating the sustainability of the products to you as a consumer. For example, does
the label convince you the product is sustainable? Does the label convince you the product
is more or less sustainable than an alternative product? Explain why.
Think about sustainability science concepts we learned in earlier classes that might be
relevant to the product, for example Maximum Sustainable Yield of renewable resources,
Brundtland’s definition of sustainable development, the Planetary Boundaries, the
Sustainable Development Goals. Do you think the sustainability label gives you the
information you need to be able to determine if the product is sustainable or not or more
sustainable than an alternative product.

Please do not include an introduction or conclusion, there is no space for these.
Paragraphs should be used, with minimal dot points.
Text font size can be between 8 and 12 to ensure the writing is legible for marking.
