Question: Throughout this course, we have looked at the relationship between Public
Relations and Journalism, their inter-reliance on each other for news production and
promotion of information and the tensions between them. Referring to the case studies we
have looked at in this course and to course readings,
write an essay that:
• Discusses the different goals and approaches of PR and journalism.
• Critiques the tensions between them.• Highlights their different ethical responsibilities and challenges.

*Failure to include readings and cases studies drawn from the course will result in a

Is this an academic style essay or a news style assessment?
It is academic. Please use academic essay conventions and citations (Harvard or, if permitted by your
tutor, APA).
What is the due date?
See Moodle.
Can I use other readings and case studies not from the course?
It's important that the majority of your research is from the course – the readings/lectures and case
studies – see note re: case studies in question below.
If you do further research, that's ideal. But if you fail to engage with the course materials, that is not
ideal.
What readings can we use?
**The lectures – source the readings from these and use the original source rather than quoting me if a
reading is highlighted in the lecture.
If it is something I have said in a lecture not from a cited reading, there is no need to cite me; my
opinions are freely circulated.
**The readings listed under each week. 2ther research, as needed.
How many academic readings? Can we include readings that aren’t from books and journals?
You should use at least one reading per case study. More is preferred, but don’t put so much in you
lose your own argument. Think about your thesis – argument – and what readings you need to support
your argument.
‘Readings’ include any set or optional readings listed under the course – see each week that are not
clearly a news article or a media release. E.G the MEAA code of ethics is a reading. So is the New
York Times tips for reviewing.
What is a case study? Does that mean just using one media release, for example?
A case study is one topic/news or media event; this may include multiple press releases, news
stories, or other relevant media.
What about if there is no news story or comparative material listed on tKe Moodle"
You can find news stories online and or media releases that relate to the case study. Remember a case
study is a topic, not one article and/or media release.
Can we use case studies that our tutor have used that may not have been listed under Moodle / covered
in the lecture?
Yes.
How many cases studies should I use?
You should use two to three and supplement that with readings – remember a case study is a topic, not
just one article.
The media release , Zant to use has been deleted by tKe oUganisation – how do I source this?

How do I cite case studies?
If a news story with an author, they can put the name of the journalist who wrote it, the date – and
n.p.; e.g. $uthor Simply put the company/organisation if no named author (e.g. a media release) (2rganisation Then put the reference per Harvard or APA style for electronic / online resource in the reference list.

What if there is no date or page?
Write in the reference:
n.d. – no date
n.p. – no page
I’m worried the translation app I use will trigger the AI detector.
It does, but it is expected that translation apps may be used, so it does not trigger an investigation by
itself. AI investigations are a combination of suspected indicators.
How many sentences in a paragraph in an essay style?
You will do longer paragraphs, but please don’t do too long, like ten sentences. 3aragraph structure
usually contains the following elements: summary of the point you want to make; further e[planation
or e[plication if needed; evidence from a source, usually; linking sentences at the beginning or end

Can we quote?
Yes, use academic style attribution .e.g “…………..” (Surname Quotes require page numbers. If no page, write n.p. You can also paraphrase but you
still need to cite as well.
