APMA2822H TOPICS IN APPROXIMATION THEORY FINAL PROJECT Throughout the class, you have been set weekly assignments consisting of self- contained problems which led to a result that is either directly related to the class or is a relevant side issue. While we covered a lot of material in the class, we have barely scratched the subject and there is a vast amount of further, interesting, material that we did not cover. One of the aims of the project is to give you the opportunity to delve more deeply into an aspect of the class that interests you. • The assignment for the final project is to identify an aspect of the class that interests you, and to do some independent reading on the topic. Your objective is to produce a problem set based on the material that you read along with a set of model solutions to your assignment. The level and length of your problem set should be similar to those set during the course. • Each problem should include a numerical example that requires some pro- gramming. Each problem should also contain some non-trivial theoretical result which you can help the reader to prove by breaking down the proof into a number of smaller steps that can be tackled by the reader. The problem should be set in such a way that it could be tackled by one of your classmates. Marks will be assigned based on the following criteria: interest of the problem and its relevance to the course; clarity of the problem and correctness of solutions; and, the balance between theoretical and numerical aspects of the problem. You should produce an original problem. I am not looking for something that is based on a problem taken from someone else’s class or from a textbook. You should include a statement of any materials you consulted to help set the problem, and also any materials that you read while deciding what problem to set. You should turn in a single document consisting of the problem written in a similar form to the weekly assignments, along with a set of solutions. Mark Ainsworth April 9, 2025 1
