GEOS 1701
Water Use Report

Class Data Summary
T2 2025

Please use this class dataset as you see fit in the Discussion of your Water Use Assignment
Final Report. You can include the Table in your report, but you should give it the appropriate
number.

Table 1: Mean daily water use per person for the GEOS1701 T2 2025 class. The results are organised
by accommodation type.

Accommodation/Dwelling
Type Count Daily water use per person
Mean
(L) Min (L) Max (L) Std Dev'n
Freestanding house 67 173 55 629 95
Terrace/townhouse/semi-
detached house 18 176 76 441 79
Apartment/flat/unit 48 179 15 513 97
Student
accommodation/college 21 201 52 512 109
Total Count and Overall Mean 154 178

Important notes for Table 1.
• A couple of students reported unrealistic/unusual usage volumes and therefore these were
excluded from the data.
• I was not able to input data that was sent to me after the 5 pm Thursday deadline.
Table 2: Most common use of water reported across all accommodation types for the
GEOS1701 T2 2025 class.

Usage Type Count
Shower / Bath 126
Cooking and Washing Dishes 9
Washing Clothes 6
Toilet Flushing 6
Outdoor Uses 2
Cleaning 1
Other 4
TOTAL 154

The results in Table 2 are pretty self-explanatory. Most students reported shower /bath as the
activity using the most water in their household.

As for who was the most unreliable person in your home when it came to filling in the charts, 132
people answered this question and here are the results:

No-one (everyone was quite reliable = 31.8%
Siblings = 23.5%
Parents = 21.2%
Father = 16.7%
Brother = 15.9%
Other = 15.2%
Sister = 7.6%
Partner = 4.5%
Mother = 4.5%
Yourself = 3.8% (at least some people were honest and/or didn’t change their water use habits!)

It’s hard to take these results too seriously because we don’t know how many people lived with
family etc., but it’s clear that siblings, parents and males were the problem!
