field of business information systems, and to present your findings in a
written report.
Value 25% of your total marks for the unit.

Assessment
Criteria
● Extent of research and degree of understanding of the particular topic
area;
● Selection of suitable resources to address your chosen topic (This will
involve identifying the significant theorists/practitioners writing on the
topic, and selecting resources that trace the development of the topic up
to very current thinking in the field);
● Skills in critical analysis and evaluation of the literatures, and in
synthesising insights from literature into a coherent narrative;
● Clarity and logic of the line of argument presented
● Ability to apply broader principles to the specific topic, and to derive
implications for practice;
● Effectiveness of structure and written communication skills;
● Accurate referencing of sources in text references and reference list.
Late Penalties ● As per university policy, assignments that are late and have not been
granted an extension will incur a penalty of 10% per day with an
automatic fail after 7 days.
SELECTED BIS TOPIC
1
The management board of your organization asked you to report on a specific area of business
information systems (BIS) that the organisation is currently interested in for future development
within the organization. The purpose of this project is to familiarise your audience with examples
of current and emerging issues, technologies, and concepts that your organisation may invest for
the future.
This assignment requires you to study in depth one topic of interest from the field of business
information systems, and to present your findings in a written report. The report should
demonstrate that you have investigated, reviewed and effectively synthesised the literature for
your chosen topic, and that you have been able to assemble a coherent argument of your view on
this topic. In addition, they should also highlight the current state of a particular type and/or issue
of BIS, and address how organisations are currently using the BIS and/or are impacted on by the
issue, i.e. what a manager should know about it and any additional references or sources of
information for others who may wish to learn more. You might cover the definition, name the key
vendors or players, discuss the history (VERY briefly), discuss managerial issues, give some
examples of use or impact, and provide some recommendations to the board of the organisation.
POSSIBLE TOPICS
Topics may be chosen from any area of relevance to business information systems (BIS). Below is a
list of possible areas of topics:
1. Adoption of a particular type of BIS (e.g., BI/BA, DSS, CRM, ERP, Healthcare system, etc.) in
a specific industry sector (such as financial services, manufacturing, health care, education)
or in a particular country (e.g., Australia)
2. Adoption issues of a particular new type of technology (e.g., cloud computing, big data
analytics, digital technologies, Internet of Things)
3. Strategies to promote a particular type of BIS adoption and usage in organisations
4. Influence of social and organisational factors (e.g., organisational culture, social norms, and
institutional forces) on human behaviours associated with a particular type of BIS
5. Influence of individual and collective behaviours on the design and use of a particular type
of BIS
6. Influence of a particular type of BIS on individual behaviours, group dynamics, and
organizational norms and policies
7. Organisational issues in a particular type of BIS implementation and success
8. The effects of a particular type of BIS on the competitive behaviour of firms
9. A particular type of technology (e.g., mobile computing, social computing, cloud
computing, big data analytics, digital technologies, Internet of Things) and its opportunities
and challenges for organisations
10. A particular type of technology (e.g., mobile computing, social computing, cloud
computing, big data analytics, digital technologies, Internet of Things) and its effects on
organisations
11. Emerging technologies and their social and organisational consequences
The above are just suggestions, which may help you in your selection of a topic. The suggested
topics given above may be modified, scaled down, merged or applied in a distinctive way to a
particular context, country, industry sector or organisation. You may also nominate your own
topic with approval by your tutor.

REPORT FORMAT AND LENGTH
The assignment should be submitted in report rather than essay format. You can find general
guidance on assignment writing at http://www.monash.edu.au/lls/llonline/writing/index.xml. The
length of the written report should be between 2,000 and 2,500 words excluding references.
Please use Times New Roman or Arial font style, font size 12, and single space. Each page must be
numbered, and include appropriate header containing your student ID, name, and unit code.
REFERENCES
At least 10 (TEN) significant references should be accessed for the assignment and listed at the end
of the report. These may include websites and newspaper articles and should be as current and
substantive as possible – you are expected to provide at least 2 (TWO) references to material
published very recently (2019-2020) and at least 5 (FIVE) journal/conference articles from the
Library. Sources should be substantial, that is, more than two pages in length, representing the key
theorists/practitioners in the field, and including recent perspectives on the topic.
All sources of information must be fully and appropriately acknowledged in in-text citation and
reference list. The basic citing and referencing requirements are:
● all sources appropriately cited and referenced using the APA citation style
(http://guides.lib.monash.edu/content.php?pid=346637&sid=2835402),
● any direct quotes from sources clearly identified as such with the use of quotation marks, a
citation and a reference, and
● no patchwork paraphrasing.
Note:
You are encouraged to use materials from a variety of sources BUT materials copied from
other sources that are NOT acknowledged in appropriate references will be considered as
plagiarism and is a serious offence that will result in failure.

Plagiarism occurs when students fail to acknowledge that the ideas of others are being used.
Specifically it occurs when:
● other people’s work and/or ideas are paraphrased and presented without a reference;
● other people’s work is copied either in whole or in part;
● other people’s designs, codes or images are presented as the student’s own work;
● phrases and passages are used verbatim without quotation marks and/or without a
reference to the author or a web page;
