Assignment 2 (60%): Evaluation of a Lighting Design
Please read all instructions before commencing this assignment.
Due Wednesday 21st July at 11:59 pm
Imagine the following scenario.
As you are just about to complete your unit of study, ‘Designing with Surfaces and Light’, you have
commenced a Lighting Design Internship for a small lighting design firm. Your boss is looking for a
person to write a Lighting Master Plan for an interior retail space. You have told your boss that you
would like to do the project.
To assess if are suitable for the project, your boss has requested that you complete the following
tasks:

Select the interior of a retail space where you can analyse the electric light and daylight. You
will need to be able to observe your space during daylight hours.
[Hint: Consider selecting an area where you can observe your space for some time.]

If a retail space is inaccessible to you, contact your lecturer joelene.elliott@sydney.edu.au
to discuss an alternative.

[Hint: Consider analysing a café, restaurant, bookshop, shopping centre, library, waiting area, food court or
cinema foyer. If you select a large area, only observe a portion of the space.]

1) Investigate your space.
Now that you have selected your space take time to understand your space. You can learn more
about your space through observation, research, and knowledge acquired from DESA1004 modules.
• Your first task is to present a concise description of your selected space.
(100 words, maximum mark 5/5)
[Hint: You may like to include name, location, approximate year the lighting was installed, approximate year
the daylighting component was designed, demographics of the users, cultural or historical significance, energy
initiatives (if any) - It is up to you to decide the most relevant information to include in this section.]

2) Visual tasks within the space
• Write a paragraph about the visual tasks that are required within your space. In this
paragraph, you should identify the lighting that is currently used to facilitate these
tasks. If the lighting in your space is inadequate for the visual tasks, identify how
lighting could be improved. Include at least one citation from your personal
research.

3) Read the following statements.
Good lighting:
1. Is where the art and science of lighting merge.
2. Creates lighting solutions that add to the pleasure of being in a space.
3. Does not seem like it is an addition to the space (complements the
architecture).
[Note: These points are not listed in any particular order]

• Select the statement that is most relevant to your selected space (1, 2 or 3).

• Explain why and how your selected statement is relevant to your chosen space and
include at least one citation from the unit modules and one citation from your
personal research.
(200 words, maximum mark 10/10)
[Example: Within my selected space, light fittings and fixtures have been located discreetly. Techniques such
as cove lighting and the use of glare shields have been employed. This design approach enables the occupants
of the space to focus on the structural elements of the interior rather than the light sources. The techniques
(in my selected space) are reminiscent of the Lighting Designers and Speers and Major (2010) approach in the
Grand Mosque. Many of the luminaires in my space appear to be similar to ERCO. ERCO is a lighting
manufacturer that produces luminaires with a minimalistic appearance. ERCO (2021) believes lighting fittings
should be unobtrusive.]

4) Read the following statement about the modern motivations of daylighting:
1. Architectural: the interplay of natural light and building form to provide a
visually stimulating, healthful, and productive interior environment.
2. Lighting Energy Savings: the replacement of indoor electric illumination
needs by daylight, resulting in reduced annual energy consumption for
lighting.
3. Building Energy Consumption: the use of fenestration* systems and
responsive electric lighting controls reduces overall building energy
requirements (heating, cooling, lighting).
4. Load Management: dynamic control of fenestration and lighting to manage
and control building peak electric demand and load.
5. Cost: the use of daylighting strategies to minimise operating costs and
maximise output, sales, or productivity.
*light infiltrating through an opening or transparent surface
[Note: These points are not listed in any particular order]
Select one statement that is the least relevant to your selected space. Using information
that you have learned from your unit (DESA1004) and scholarly/credible research, write at
least one paragraph as to how the consideration of this point could be used to enhance your
space. Include at least one citation from the unit modules and one citation from your
personal research.

[Hint: I selected point one. In the restaurant, I observed the daylighting provides sufficient illumination for the
customers to read menus. But the daylighting does not enhance the interior environment. I look to lighting
design handbooks and information from course modules to provide specific suggestions on how this can be
improved].

5) Knowledge of the human visual system
As designers, understanding how the human visual system enables us to predict how most
people will perceive objects and an environment.
From the information in modules 9 and 10, select one thing that interests you about the
human visual system. Write a paragraph as to how this information is relevant to design.
Include at least one citation from your personal research.

Assignment guidelines, hints and tips:
• Ensure citations are in a scholarly format. APA is preferred. If you would like to use
another format, please note (on your reference list page) what style you are using.
• Details of all works cited within the assignment should be included on a reference
list page.
• Wherever possible, your writing should be analytical rather than descriptive.
