FINC5001 Foundations in Finance Winter Intensive, 2021

PART A - ORAL PRESENTATION
Weighting: 5% (summary) + 10% (oral presentation)
Due date: Friday 23rd July

After graduating from The University of Sydney, you are hired as a financial analyst by your
domestic stock exchange. You have been tasked to determine whether this stock market is
efficient using the finance skills that you have learnt in FINC5001 Foundations in Finance.
The supervisory committee at the stock exchange will be meeting very soon and will require
you to present your preliminary findings about the impact of news events and market
efficiency arising from a public announcement.

During the presentation, you will need to cover the following points, at the very least:
1. Select one publicly listed company that is either listed on the ASX (Australia), NASDAQ
(US) or Shanghai Stock Exchange (China).
2. Describe the main operations and provide a business summary for a holistic overview of
this chosen company.
3. Explain whether your chosen company has been impacted and how your chosen
company has fared during the COVID19 pandemic.
4. Find three news articles about your chosen company and briefly describe each article.
Explain how the event(s) detailed in the new articles have affected your company. These
articles need to be dated any time from the start of 2020 till now.
5. Select one public announcement made by your chosen company and briefly describe the
context. Explain how the stock price of your chosen company would adjust after this
announcement to appropriately reflect this new information at the time that it is released
to the market. This announcement needs to be dated any time from the start of 2020 till
now.

Further details:
1. The oral presentation should be no longer than 7 minutes in duration. This is a hard upper
limit – the Teaching Team will stop your presentation at 7 minutes. Any material
presented after the 7 minute limit will not contribute to your grade.
2. You should use visual aids during the presentation, such as Powerpoint, Word, Excel
and/or Google Slides. Please create a presentation slide deck that addresses the main
points above. Remember that you should refrain from creating wordy and lengthy slides.
Slides that are overly cluttered also detract from the presentation – focus on presenting
information in a concise manner. You do not need to submit the visual aids for Part A of
the Major Assignment.
3. The oral presentation will delivered live on Zoom in a pre-booked time slot. Using Zoom,
you should turn on your camera and share the screen of your Powerpoint presentation
during the whole session.
4. You will need to identify yourself with an identification card at the start of this session to
the Teaching Team.
5. If you have elected to do the Major Assignment as a pair, both members will need to
present during this session. However, you will need to decide, as a pair, an appropriate
allocation of the presentation time – this need not be a 50:50 (3.5 minutes each) split.
6. You will also need to submit a summary of your presentation prior to your Zoom session
time. This is due on Friday 23rd July at 9am and is worth 5% of the total marks in this UoS.
a. The summary should be a maximum of 1 page in length. It should use single line
spacing with size 12 Arial or Calibri font and normal-sized (2.54cm) margins on all
sides.
b. A title page and table of contents are not required.
c. Any part of the main body of the summary over the 1 page limit will not contribute
to your grade.
d. Ensure you use proper academic referencing, particularly in referencing the source
of your news articles and public announcements. All reports must include a list of
references in academic form using the APA 7th method. Further information on
the APA referencing style can be found here:
https://libguides.library.usyd.edu.au/citation/apa7. You will be penalised if you
forget to reference your sources or use inappropriate referencing.
e. The reference list will not be counted within the 1 page limit.
f. The summary must be submitted as a PDF document. You must submit the report
electronically via the Turnitin link on Canvas.
