CSC8599 - Project and Dissertation for Computer Game
Engineering MSc - Dissertation
Summary
Once the project is finished a dissertation will be expected. The dissertation should be a highly
detailed piece of academic writing that will portray what was achieved and why during the
project.
Deliverables
● A report should be at most 20 pages
Use the ACM template and follow their guidelines:
https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template
Academic Supervised Project:
A dissertation that is not longer than 20 pages. A movie hosted on a web site (e.g., YouTube or
similar, can be private) is also expected to show the project working (advertise the work) - you
may want a detailed movie more technically focused to accompany the dissertation. Put the link
to the movie in your dissertation (just below the title).
Studio Based Project:
A dissertation that is not longer than 20 pages. A member of the studio will provide a written
evaluation of the student’s work. You may want a longer detailed movie more technically
focused than the one expected in the presentation specification (demo reel) to accompany the
dissertation. If a game exists (released to public), then you can provide a link to the game site
itself (if available). Put the link to the technical movie and the demo reel (as mentioned in the
Presentation Specification) in your dissertation (just below the title).
Dissertation Outline
1. Introduction - describing the general area and the aim and objectives of the project.
2. Background and related work - providing a detailed study of existing solutions and
highlighting why the work is an advance on such solutions. This is where the justification
is reinforced giving reason to the project.
(please note that the first two sections are extended versions of the original progress
report, but with a better insight due to the added knowledge gained throughout the
project).
3. Design and Implementation - what was done and how. Always remember that you need
to justify your reasons for taking a particular approach.
4. Results and evaluation - demonstrate that you have achieved aims and objectives and
show any performance figures (with discussion) that have been obtained.
5. Conclusions - summarise the project and highlight those key features that you think
make the greatest contribution. Include in this section your own opinion of how you
think the project went. Include a section on future work to say how your project could
be taken forward.
Marks
35% of the project (this equates to 28 credits).
