Assessment Description
First part (Interview Critical Summary, a group component): In small groups you will identify and interview a
professional working in a creative or cultural industry of your choice to investigate further into their practice,
philosophy, and values. Your group will devise a set of questions to ask your interviewee — for example, about
their ethical premises, professional trajectory, interdisciplinarity, recent projects etc. Your group will arrange, set-
up, conduct and record the interview collaboratively. After the interview, your group will create an ‘Interview
Critical Summary’ containing:
1) names and zIDs of all group members and name of your interviewee;
2) the group’s rationale for selecting the interviewee, including a critical evaluation of the interviewee’s
current design practice;
3) a critical evaluation of how the interviewee contributes to the making of a design culture in their
professional context;
4) the questions your group posed to the interviewee;
5) reference list, demonstrating the research done and resources used in preparing for the interview.

Second part (Mini Visual Essay, an individual component): Individually, your will critically analyse and
interpret the interview. You will write, illustrate and produce a mini-visual essay that will demonstrate your
advanced understanding of professional contexts and career pathways in the expanded field of design.

How to complete the assessment
First part (Interview Critical Summary, a group component):
Step 1: Your group will select one creative professional whom you wish to interview. You will discuss
your selection with your tutor who will provide further guidance. You will engage in various activities in
class that will help you generate relevant questions and learn how to conduct an interview.
Step 2: Your group will contact the interviewee and schedule a suitable date for the interview. This can
be conducted in person, as a phone conversation or online via Zoom, Microsoft team etc.
Step 4: In preparation to the interview, you will collaboratively research into your interviewee’s career
trajectory, and based on the information gathered you will develop a set of relevant questions for the
interview.
Step 5: After conducting and recording the interview, your group will produce the first part of the
submission, the ‘Interview Critical Summary’

Second part (Mini Visual Essay, an individual component):
Step 6: Individually, you will write a mini visual essay based on your interpretation and analysis of the
interview. You will start with an excerpt from the interview that stimulated a personal reflection on your
own existing or intended professional contexts and career pathways. This passage can be a quote
extracted from the interview or a whole paragraph which formed an answer to a specific question posed
during the interview.
Step 7: You will transcribe that interview excerpt and write up a 750-word reflective analysis on how your
design practice (for example, a studio project) and your prospective contribution to design cultures and
discourse have been or might become. (NB: the interview passage does not count towards the 750-word
limit).
Step 8: You will communicate your reflective analysis through a mini visual essay containing your
reflection and relevant visual references. In this process, you can draw from the design statement
produced for Assessment 1, and from your studio work. Please provide captions explaining parts of your
studio practice that you discuss in this assignment alongside a reference list.

Step 9: Each student will submit two assessment parts via Moodle: the group component and the individual one.
Note that the group component will not vary among members of the same group, but the individual component
will be unique to each student.

Submission Requirements:
• Each student will submit two separate documents. Both parts of your assignment must be saved as a
PDF file with readable text:
o Interview Critical Summary: one file per group consisting of four parts as specified in the
assessment description above;
o Mini Visual Essay: file no bigger than 10MB.
• Both parts should contain a reference list with all sources—written and visual—used in your research,
and in-text citations when relevant. They all should be formatted in the APA referencing style.
• Prior to submission, you will undertake a number of in-class activities including Assessment 2 workshop
in week 7.
• Please note that although Moodle indicates that due date is Monday you should submit your assignment
by 9am on the day of your tutorial in week 11.
• Late submission is allowed but it incurs penalty – see the Course Outline for details. Once the file is
submitted to Moodle you cannot change it or replace it with another file.
