Individual Assignment: Data Literacy and BI Tools
with 2016 Australian Census Data
The Brief
Like many jurisdictions throughout the world, the Australian Government has made accessing data
more convenient and accessible (or ‘open’). As a national government, through the Australian Bureau
of Statistics (ABS) it collects statistics regarding the people and environment of Australia. A Census is
held every five years by the ABS, with the 2021 Census being held on Tuesday, 10 August 2021.
However, it takes time to process the results after data collection, so we will be looking at data from the
2016 Census as this is already available for our perusal.
While much open data is made available through general-purpose portals, the ABS publishes Census
DataPacks through a specific webpage. The webpage (http://datapacks.censusdata.abs.gov.au/
datapacks/) allows the user (you!) to select which Census, which data and which are you are interested
in and to download an extract of data for data regarding these selections.
The General Community Profile data provides a wide range of statistics and indicators gathered from
the census and can be used to answer many questions regarding the state of Australia or certain areas
or groups within it.
The Task
The Individual Assignment for INMT5526 (Business Intelligence) is to analyse statistics within the
‘General Community Profile’ DataPack from the ‘2016 Census’. Within the DataPack, you will find
approximately 60 tables
Using one or more of the tables within the DataPack, your job is to develop a problem statement that
may be informed by the data within the DataPack. Import the relevant dataset(s), transform and analyse
the data within Power BI Desktop before presenting the results as a single dashboard to answer the
question within your original problem statement.
This task is deliberately open-ended to give you the freedom to create your assignment in the way you
wish, within the boundaries. You will need to create an infographic (the Power BI Desktop reports and/or
dashboards) as well as a short report explaining it to help justify a business or public policy position.
This is an important skill as data is plentiful but only useful if knowledge or conclusions can be gained
from it.
This report will be based on descriptive statistics – numerical summaries which may be conditional
when the user drills through the data through the use of appropriate visualisations. For many of you,
this will be your first application of analytics within the field of Business Intelligence, however through
your previous experience and work in this unit, we expect that you will have written reports and
undertaken basic analysis.
Marking Guidelines
The guidelines below for page numbers and words are only that; they are there to give you an idea
about the size of the report and are not ‘hard limits’. Consider that some sections may have screenshots,
graphs and tables and others will not.
A full marking rubric will be made available on the submission page for expectations. Please turn to the
next page for an explanation of each component of the assessment.

Submission Details
The assignment should be submitted by the date and time listed on the Unit Outline (details of which
will also be provided on LMS) using the submission point on LMS. Please submit the .pbix file from
Power BI Desktop alongside a word-processed document for the report. If the date and time of

1 You will be accessing secondary data. The purpose of such data releases is to make data available
for organisations or persons to analyse to make decisions or for entrepreneurs to create new
products. Part of this assignment is to think of something exciting (or important) that the data will
support.
