Report on Load Carrying Elements | Assignment 1 ENGR20003 | Semester 2 - 2023
Analysing the load and construction
materials of a building
You will be analysing the methods of which loads are transferred in
buildings.
A building of your choice (it can be where you live, where you work, an on-
campus building or a building you are interested in) can be selected for this
purpose.
You’ll also be investigating some common materials used in construction of
this building.
Assignment length and presentation
Your submission should be in a report format with abstract, introduction,
body of the report, conclusion and references. Divide your discussions into
sections with clear headings for each section.
Your report must not exceed twelve pages including figures and references.
Text should be typed in a standard font format and single spaced. Use a
balance of words, sketches, photographs and tables to communicate
effectively. Figures and tables should be appropriately captioned and
referenced.
Each of you is to prepare a report addressing the
following points.
Points to address
1. Provide general description of the building of your choice. The description
should include (but not limited to): photograph of the building; age of the
building; types of structural elements; construction materials (for both load
carrying elements and façade). The general description should not exceed 1
page.
2. Sketch the plan view of a typical floor and elevation views of the building
(two elevation views are required). The sketches should indicate the
building’s load carrying elements. Note: these sketches should be based on
your observation and estimation. The sketches should clearly indicate the
load carrying elements of the building and are to be drawn at a suitable
scale. The sketches can either be drawn using a suitable software or by hand.

3. Describe loads that are acting on the building and how the loads are transferred to the ground. You may
categorise the loads into gravitational and lateral loads (such as wind). Using a suitable elevation view from
above (Q2), indicate the gravitational load path and the lateral load path for this building.
Note: Gravitational load path and Lateral load path need to be indicated in two separate diagrams.
4. Pick one of the load carrying elements in the building at the ground level or at a location where the load
carried by the element is the highest.
i. Identify the material composition of the chosen load carrying element.
ii. Estimate basic properties of the material/s such as density, Young’s modulus, yield strength and/or
ultimate strength and other relevant physical properties.
5. For the structural element identified in Q4 above;
i. Perform a calculation on the gravitational load carried by this structural element.
ii. Comparing against material properties identified in Q4(ii), discuss the suitability of the material in
resisting and transferring this load.
END OF ASSIGNMENT 1
You may share your thoughts with your classmates
but avoid letting the content of your report to be
copied by others.
Further, the online submission will give you a percent
of similarity of your work compared to the previous
year’s ones and online sources. The higher percent
the lower the mark.
