Course information Units of credit: 6 Pre-requisite(s): N/A Teaching times and locations: http://www.timetable.unsw.edu.au 2.1 Course summary This course covers the broad range of management decisions faced within the general, corporate and regional aviation sectors and how that is impacted by Government and regulation. The aviation environment within which management functions and makes economic decisions is introduced. How this sector is regulated and the impact of those regulations on the Sector is studied. Technical issues are discussed; competition, revenue, costs and pricing are considered. The management and operation of Regional airports, recreational aviation, Remotely Piloted Aircraft (drones) and management of autonomous flight, and flying training schools are examined. Case studies on specific Regional airlines and airports are presented and discussed. 2.2 Course aims The objective of the course is for students to understand the management challenges unique to this sector of the industry and its relationships with other aviation bodies. The focus is on management issues and understanding the strategic decision-making process. The course will consider the many different types of operation in this sector, from larger Regional airlines to specialist flying such as the “flyin – flyout” mining operations, recreational flying, RPAS and how these differ from mainstream operations. Market supply and demand for aircraft and the skills and technical support needed to safely operate in this challenging environment will be discussed. The course covers current operations of the general and regional aviation industry both in Australia and throughout the region. 3 2.3 Course learning outcomes (CLO) The course is designed to provide students with knowledge of how this airline sector and airports are managed and the importance of this Sector to Regional economies. The future operating environment of Regional aviation will be discussed together with technological and capability changes (for example autonomous operations) which have the potential to transform Regional aviation. At the successful completion of this course you (the student) should be able to: 1. Understand the complexity, scope and regulatory issues impacting the Regional Aviation industry in Australia and the Region 2. Understand the complexity, scope and regulatory issues impacting the General Aviation industry in Australia 3. Understand the technical and operational scope, Government involvement and regulatory issues impacting the control of Airspace in Australia and the Region 4. Understand the scope, size, safety and regulatory issues impacting business aviation, aerial agriculture, Flying doctors, flying schools, crop-dusting, and private flying aviation in Australia 5. Discuss issues associated with autonomous operations in Regional areas 6. Submit individual assignment. Two Case studies CLO 4 An understanding of how Air traffic Management (ATM) affects Regional aviation and airports in Australia, how this is regulated. Review of current operations and of the proposed “Next Generation” ATM, and how that affects the industry. CLO5 Emerging capabilities – autonomous flight , eVTOL and next generation aircraft which will enable more cost effective Regional Services Review current literature and Regulatory Framework for autonomous flight and eVTOL operations. 4 3. Strategies and approaches to learning 3.1 Learning and teaching activities All lectures will be by remote learning presented by zoom. Invited experts will provide presentations and encourage an interactive discussion around their subject matter. The program uses practical case studies extensively. Teaching methods are designed to provide as much information as needed in a compact and understandable format and to demonstrate the pragmatic and entrepreneurial management style this sector requires. Assignments, both group and individual are designed to test knowledge, challenge current management styles and solutions, and to provide feedback to students. 3.2 Expectations of students Attendance at lectures as per the programme - one day per week over 10 weeks. Individual assignment advised at the beginning of the program and handed in mid term for marking. Feedback provided Q&A after each lecture and at the end of the day’s session. Teams will be given a management problem and will be tasked to analyse the issues and propose a strategy to resolve the issue. Each ground will present their report to the CourseThis assignment will be in Lectureselected groups with each Group presenting their findings.
