Griffith University School of Engineering and Built Environment Course title: 7305ENG – Advanced steel structures Assessment title: Final design project Due date: Week 11 – Thursday 07/10 at 23:59 pm You are asked to design the hot-rolled steel portal frame, according to the relevant Australian standards, of a warehouse in an Australian’s industrial area. This is project can be submitted individually or as a group of two. You are only required to pre-size your columns and detail your calculations for the leeward rafter only. The location and dimensions of your warehouse is given for each student at the end of this document. Just find your name in the list and design your allocated building. If you are submitting as a group of two, design the building of the student with the lowest student number. You will be solely marked according to the marking criteria posted with this project. So please make sure to answer every single criterion to score marks. The overall shape of the building is given below. To calculate the factored (*) bending moment, axial force and shear force diagrams, you can download a free student version of Space Gass at http://www.spacegass.com/student/. However, you are free to use any other Finite Element software. A tutorial for Space Gass is posted with the project. You are required to learn the software by yourself. Help can be provided during the tutorial sessions if needed. Also please note the following: 1 - All buildings below are scheduled to replace the existing buildings on site. 2 - The new buildings are orientated in the same direction as the existing buildings 3 - There is no roof ventilator on any of the new buildings. 4 - Assume the location of the doors and clearly show where the doors are located. 5 - Make reasonable assumptions and clearly state your assumptions. 6 - Use google map (satellite view) to check the surroundings of the building. 7 - Roof sheet and Purlins: Any certified provider in Australia. 8 - Make sure your building is economically sized. 9 - Design of connections are not required in this project.
