Assignment - FINM8007 Topics in International Finance (2021S2) Page 1 of 3 I. Task Description – Your Assignment, Your Design “… [T]he art of proposing a question must be held of higher value than solving it.” - Georg Cantor, Mathematician - We understand through asking questions. One skill that is uniquely powerful for learning, and allows you to stand out from the crowd in a classroom or in the workplace, is asking questions and then finding the solution. In this assignment, you have the opportunity to develop and showcase this skill, and which invites you to think deeply about what we learn in the course, become proactive in the learning, and best of all, inject your own curiosity and creativity! Your assignment, your design. YES! You will be designing your own assignment by creating FIVE questions and providing detailed solutions for each. You will be working on your own, independently (no teams). The questions should: (1) Include two numerical questions, two conceptual questions, and one question that is a mixture of both types. All questions may include multiple sub-questions, although it is not mandatory. (2) Cover at least FIVE topics we have learned in the course (up to and include Week 9). • You must specify which topic(s) and knowledge point(s) are being covered for each question (please see the problem sets for a sample). • You are encouraged to create questions that connect knowledge points within the same topic and/or across multiple topics – 0.5 bonus marks will be awarded for each successful attempt. In this course, and in the real world, you will find most problems require considerations of multiple dimensions that are inter-connected. • You are encouraged to incorporate the latest news and/or real market data into your questions and/or answers. Please cite the proper sources by referencing. Failure to do so is considered plagiarism. A maximum of 0.5 bonus marks will be awarded to each question that is based on recent market events. (3) Be internally consistent. For instance, it is not consistent to provide conditions that together suggest an arbitrage opportunity, but later specify “assuming no arbitrage” (unless you could justify that). Imagine how confused “your students” might feel ☺. Please check the conditions you provide are consistent with each other. You might find inspirations from class examples, problem sets, text books, or any existing material, but your questions must be your original and independent creation and must not be copied. Your submission will be checked via Turnitin and plagiarism is taken very seriously as outlined in the course summary and ANU Student Code of Conduct. Please refer to the ANU's Academic Integrity and Misconduct Policies (link provided on Wattle) for the best practices. Assignment - FINM8007 Topics in International Finance (2021S2) Page 2 of 3 II. Hints to Keep in Mind (1) Taking questions from existing resources with only changes in the number and wording will not satisfy the originality requirement. Using others’ ideas and passing them off as your own is plagiarism. (2) Multiple choice questions must be accompanied with detailed explanations to EACH choice, i.e., justification must be given to choices that are incorrect stating why these are incorrect. Solutions without sufficient workings and/or sensible explanations are given zero. (3) Quotation marks are needed if you quote from any published sources, including the lecture slides. Also, you have to demonstrate that you do understand what you quote by providing your own, extended explanation. Simply copy-and-paste from any sources, including any course material, will be given zero. (4) In the case of a question that includes sub-parts, these sub-parts must be clearly related and connected. For sub-parts that are clearly independent and has no relation to each other, i.e., if the subparts are placed together merely for the sake of the cross- topic bonus mark, subparts after the first subpart will not be read nor marked. (5) If contents/knowledge in one topic are enough to answer a question – that is, knowledge from a different topic is not necessary for answering that question, the cross-topic bonus mark will not be awarded, even if you indicate multiple topics within the question tags and the question description. (6) For this assignment, any figure/data/news prior to 2019 would not be considered the “latest”, and therefore no bonus marks will be awarded. V.
