AUDIO SYSTEMS & MEASUREMENT: MEASUREMENT ASSIGNMENT TASK 3 THIS EXERCISE CONTRIBUTES TO THE MEASUREMENT ASSIGNMENT (25% OF THE TOTAL UNIT OF STUDY MARK). DUE DATE 15 OCTOBER 2021. AIM: The purpose of this exercise is to develop and demonstrate techniques to deal with diverse audio system characteristics. Please refer to the modules for weeks 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 for concepts relevant to this task. Please refer to the Week 7 Canvas page ‘Measuring simulated audio systems’ for information and resources specific to this measurement task. That includes the AARAE processor ASM2021system.m, which you will need to add to your AARAE folder structure. Task description Select any four of the audio systems from the range 2-12 for measurement. For each audio system, provide an analysis. What you choose to do really depends on what is interesting for the particular audio system, and the following possibilities are just suggestions: • Describe, demonstrate, and interpret how the audio system can be measured effectively – e.g. its LTI response, suppressing background noise, etc • Describe, demonstrate, and interpret a common measurement approach that is vulnerable to issues present in the system (i.e., a generally good method but which yields a bad result for the particular system) • Describe, demonstrate, and interpret how the noise, non-LTI, and/or uncertainty aspects of the system can be measured • Describe, demonstrate, and interpret alternative methods of measuring the system (particularly appropriate for non-linear distortion) For most cases (apart from ‘silence sweep’) you are encouraged to use AARAE’s silent cycle – so that the signal-to- noise ratio can be shown. Some suggestions for measurement/analysis approaches are on the ‘Measuring simulated audio systems’ Canvas page. However, you might have other great ideas! It may help to support your interpretation with theory. Page limits and marks The first three of the four analyses are limited to 1 A4 page each. [5 marks each] The fourth analysis is limited to 2 A4 pages, so that you can approach it more deeply. [10 marks] You may include an extra page for references. Hints I suggest trying a few things out before choosing which systems to study. See what interests you, and where you can develop effective demonstrations and interpretations. I suggest selecting diverse systems (rather than similar ones) so that you can avoid unnecessary repetition in your report. Some systems (notably 10-12) pose difficult measurement challenges. It is fine if you don’t have an ideal solution for overcoming difficult problems, but you can still explore options and their effectiveness.
