Written Report : Formal Report (20% of the final grade)

Word limit: 2,500 words excluding references and appendices
Mark: 100 marks (equals to 10% of the final grade)

The scenario
As the Marketing Manager of the national tourism organization representing your
selected country/city, you are required to do a comprehensive study to evaluate the
country/city’s tourism strategy during the past decade and evaluate the impacts of
tourism on the country/city. You are also expected to provide recommendations with
the aim of promoting the country/city to be an attractive and sustainable tourist
destination to the Hong Kong market based upon your recommendations.

The study
1. You will be divided into 7 teams consisting of 3-6 fellow students within the
same tutorial group.
2. Each group is required to select ONE Country/City with tourism development
during the past decade. The confirmation of your selected country/city is made
basing upon the first-come-first-served basis. No duplication of country/city is
allowed.
3. You have to determine the scope and depth of your study of your selected
country/city. However, at least the following information should be covered.


Assignment

a. Discuss a transformation of tourism strategy in your selected country/city during
the past decade. For instance, it could be the exploration of new market(s), the new
tourist attraction(s), and so forth.
b. Evaluate the significance of transformation by analyzing the positive and negative

impacts (economic, socio-cultural, environmental impacts and so forth) on the
selected county/city. Please apply those theories learned in the course when
illustrating the impacts. Try to relate your analysis to the theories/concepts adopted.
c. Based upon your results of item (a) & (b), identify the gap(s) for promotion of
your selected country/city.
d. Collect primary data on tourists’ motivation for travel to the selected country/city
for the feasibility of your proposed promotion strategy. (Please conduct interviews
for at least 5 people living in Hong Kong (e.g. tertiary students, working adults,
and so on) who visited the selected country/city during the past 5 years).
e. Based upon the result of (d), suggest and produce any innovative
recommendations (e.g. creative video, leaflet design, and so on), in order to
promote your selected country/city to be the popular tourist destination for the
themed tourism appealing to the Hong Kong market. You should make
recommendations with the considerations of its feasibility and innovation.


Report format
1. The written report should be paged and typed in Times New Roman 12 point, single-
spaced. Please print the report in a double-sided format.
2. The length of the report should not exceed 2,500 words (excluding references and
appendices).
3. Clear headings and / or subheadings should be used in each section.
4. It should be in report format with tables, charts and relevant figures as appendices.
5. References should be provided both in-text and in a reference list in APA 6th style.
