Problem 50 points
You will answers several questions using the RECS survey data that we have discussed in class available here. For each question,
write a sentence or two that directly answers the question(s) and, when indicated, produce a well formatted table or graph as
indicated. For all statistics presented as point estimates, also include 95% confidence intervals. You will answer the exact same
question as of Homework 2 using the data.table approach. Your answer should be same as that of Homework 2.
Problem 1a (5 points)
For each state or groups of states, what is the national average home temperature at night in winter.
Problem 1b (15 points)
Create a plot comparing, by state/groups of states and urban type, the average winter home temperatures at night and during the day
with someone home.
Problem 1c (20 points)
Create some visualization to compare the difference of the average winter home temperatures at night for homes with main space
heating equipment used as Built-in Electric Units and Portable Electric Heaters, by state (groups of states) and urban type. Is there a
difference between those two for US household during winter at night? Are there any difference among the different states? Does
urban type play a role?
Problem 1d (10 points)
Among homes that use space heating, what is the (national) mean difference between the daytime (with someone home) and
nighttime temperatures for each level of “type of main space heating equipment used”? You can exclude those data for whom the
latter variable is not applicable. Create a nicely formatted table or graph to display your results.
