DATA 200 Project Draft
Section 1
Draft Introduction:
The topic of my study is different socioeconomic groups having different life-style and the
life-style will cause different health problems.
I will be focused on the following questions:
- How different types of drug use for different socioeconomic groups?
- How does drug use affect the Current Health Status and the Disability?
In my opinion, it is very interesting that there are stereotypes of drug addiction that are based
on the economic status that people have.We always believe the stereotype, which states all of
the drug addicts are uneducated, homeless, and jobless. And they are the kind of people who
are in a lower economic status. However, people who are in a higher economic statu will
have the ability to get the drugs and can afford the cost. Why won't they be drug addictions?
Data use:
- Income: INQ_I.XPT
Get the different socioeconomic groups.
- Current Health Status: HSQ_I.XPT
Have an idea of the basic health status of socioeconomic groups.
- Drug Use: DUQ_I.XPT
One of the main data sets of drug use. Such as the usage of marijuana,
cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine.
- Disability: DLQ_I.XPT
Differences in disability may be due to drug use. Such as hearing-difficulty,
seeing-difficulty, concentrating-difficulty, walking-difficulty, feeling anxious or not,
getting treatment for depression and so on.
Section 2
Draft Literature Review:
“Related Tie Between Economic Status and Substance Abuse” by Ben Lesser
Lesser, B. (2021, March 20). Related Tie Between Economic Status and Substance
Abuse. Dualdiagnosis.org. Retrieved November 23, 2021, from
https://dualdiagnosis.org/drug-addiction/economic-status/.
This article talked about the stereotypes that lower socioeconomic groups will be more likely
to be drug additions than high socioeconomic groups. Even though this idea has been talked
about for years, Ben also gives the proof of how the income difference will be one of the
factors that cause lower economic statu groups to get drugs.
However the stereotypes could be a fixed, over generalized belief about a particular group or
class of people. I have a guess that high income groups may also have an addiction to drugs. I
also read an interview of the Democratic Rep. Joe Deshotel from Texas urged there is no

evidence that poor people abuse drugs more frequently than any other socio-economic group.
This interview gives me an idea about if there is an exception that high socioeconomic groups
may also like to use drugs. I will build the model to find out the relation of drug-usage and
income.
