Official Description of the Course:
MAT 4378: Multi-way contingency tables. Generalized linear models for bi-
nary and count data. Logistic regression; inference and model verification. Log-
linear and logit models for multiway frequency tables. Applications drawn from
life sciences. Statistical computer packages will be used in the course.
1
MAT 5317: Analysis of one-way and two-way tables of nominal date; multi-
dimensional contingency tables, log-linear models; tests of symmetry, marginal
homogeneity in square tables; incomplete tables; tables with ordered categories;
fixed margins, logistic models with binary response; measures of association and
agreement; biological applications. This course is equivalent to STAT 5602 at
Carleton University
Prerequisites for MAT 4378:
Prerequisite: MAT 3375.
Textbook: An Introduction to Categorical Data Analysis, 3rd Edition.
Authors: Alan Agresti. The professor will indicate the parts of textbook that
correspond to the different sections of the course as the course progresses.
Internet Resources: We will be posting all relevant information, such as
course notes and assignments, in Brightspace. You can access at the following
address: uottawa.brightspace.com.
Studying and exercises : As with all of your other courses, the key to
success in this course is to get to work from the beginning of the semester. This
work takes generally two complementary forms: a regular review of your courses
notes (and the relevant sections of the textbook), and workout relevant exercises
each week to deepen your understanding of the material covered in class.
Notes: We strongly advise you to take notes during the lecture. Then (prefer-
ably later in the same day), revise and supplement your notes with the help of
the textbook. If possible, try to work out some suggested exercises. If you find
that you have difficulty with a concept, it is important to consult the teacher
as soon as possible. To understand the concepts covered later in the semester,
you must have a good understanding of concepts covered earlier. The more you
wait, the more difficult will be your learning.
Suggested Exercises: Suggested Exercises are regularly going to be available
in Brightspace. These exercises serve as practice. Please do not ask for a practice
midterm nor a practice exam.
Statistical Software: We will learn to use R for our statistical analyses. R is
an open source programming language is is available for free, see
www.r-project.org. Here is a video concerning downloading and installing R:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iuKrPS8fMM
Midterm: A 60-minute open book midterm will be held on Monday, November 8.
2
Final Exam: A 2.5-hour open book exam will be held during the exam period
(from Dec. 9 to Dec. 22) and is cumulative (it is based on all the material
discussed during the semester).
Never write an exam if you are sick. Consult the faculty policies concerning
final exams:
http://science.uottawa.ca/en/students-etudiants/exams
Final Grade: We will compute your final grade as follows:
Assignments 30%; Test 20%; Final Exam 50%
ˆ Late assignment are not accepted. We will be counting the best 3 of 4
assignments in the computation of the final grade.
ˆ The midterm can only be written on Monday, November 8. If you are
unable to write the midterm on that date, we will transfer the weight of
the midterm to the final exam.
ˆ If you are unable to write the final exam, then the policies of the Faculty
will apply.
ˆ If your mark on the final exam is better than the mark on your midterm,
then we will compute your final grade as follows:
Assignments 30%; Final Exam 70%.
Copyrighted material:
ˆ Copyright (and intellectual property more broadly) is important as a
mechanism for rewarding creators and ensuring their compensation, as
well as their control over their work. Students themselves are copyright
owners for many things they create, including their assignments, social
media content, etc. Nobody enjoys it when their content is exploited
without permission or compensation.
ˆ Copyright infringement is a legal offence, which can lead to serious finan-
cial and reputational consequences.
ˆ Uploading course materials to a content sharing website can, in many
cases, be an instance of academic fraud as well as copyright infringe-
ment. This could lead to failure of a course, suspension, or even expulsion.
Instances of academic fraud are also often included on a student’s tran-
script, and this will follow them for life.
3
Student Services:
ˆ The purpose of these texts is to reposition the Academic Support, Health
and Wellness, and Academic Accommodations services as a result of or-
ganizational changes within the Student Affairs department.
ˆ We no longer use the word “SASS” in our terminology at the University
of Ottawa.

Academic Accommodations: Vincent Beaulieu
