DSME 6650: DATA MINING FOR MANAGERS
FINAL EXAMINATION SCOPE AND TIPS 2021 – 2022
Scope: The final examination is a two-and-a-half-hour online examination1 which
covers the following topics:
 PowerPoint notes from the textbook:
o Chapters 1 – 4
o The following topics are covered in class in the supplementary notes and the
textbook provides a very formal mathematical approach. The focus of the
final exam will be similar to the approaches we discussed in class and in the
supplementary notes/worksheet.
 Chapter 6 slides 1 – 22; 47 – 56.
 Chapter 7 slides 13 – 29; 33 – 36; 41 – 42.
 Chapter 9 slides 7 – 18; 108 – 118.
 Chapter 10 slides 1 – 48.
 All supplementary ppt notes
o Supplementary Notes to Chapter 3 (and ppt example from Introduction to
Data Mining Chapter 5)
o Review exercises and sample final exam.
 Textbook:
o Chapters 1 – 4
o Chapter 6: 6.1 All topics up to “Estimating Error Rates”, Backpropagation
and Stochastic Gradient Descent.
o Chapter 7: 7.2 All topics up to” Support Vector Regression”.
o Chapter 9: 9.1, 9.7: All topics up to Gradient Descent and Second-Order
Methods.
o Chapter 10: 10.1, 10.2: All topics up to Learning Rates and Schedules.

Tips: The final exam will focus in testing your understanding of the principles and
your abilities to apply them in the styles of Chapters 1 – 4 of the textbook, review
exercises and supplementary notes.
