COMS3200/7201 MOSS Guide
Luong Ba Duong
March 2021 (COVID Year 1)
1 Introduction
In COMS3200/7201, we will be using EAIT’s remote Linux server (MOSS)
to mark your assignments. It is highly recommended that you test your
assignments on MOSS before submission to ensure your program’s behaviour
is as expected. You should be familiar with moss from the prerequisite course
CSSE2310/7231, this document is only aimed to serve as a refresher for using
MOSS. It will not explain how to use a UNIX command line as you should
already be comfortable with this from the prerequisite course.
2 Connect to MOSS
You can connect to MOSS over SSH (port 22) atmoss.labs.eait.uq.edu.au:
2.1 If you use Linux (or macOS)
1. Connect to the Internet and open the Terminal.
2. Inside a terminal on your local machine, run:
”ssh -Y -C remote.labs.eait.uq.edu.au -l s123456” - replacing
s123456 with your Student Network Username.
3. You should receive a prompt requesting your password:
’s123456@remote.labs.eait.uq.edu.au’.
4. Enter your Student Network Password, and you should now be logged
into one of the available Student UNIX servers.

2.2 If you use Windows
PuTTY is a win32 serial/raw/rlogin/telnet/SSH/SSH2 client distributed un-
der the MIT license available from Simon Tatham’s PuTTY website.
A local copy, known to work with EAIT systems, is available for download
here: putty-0.69-installer.msi [2.75MB]
To use PuTTY:
1. Connect to the Internet and run PuTTY from the start menu.
2. Set the hostname to remote.labs.eait.uq.edu.au.
3. Ensure SSH is selected as the protocol (it’s the default, and the port
number should change to 22 automatically).
4. Click ’Open’ at the bottom of the window, you should receive a prompt
saying: ’login as:’. If you do not, check your settings and try again.
5. Respond by entering your UQ login name (e.g. s123456) and pressing
enter.
6. You will now receive a prompt requesting your password:
’s123456@remote.labs.eait.uq.edu.au’s password:’
7. Enter your UQ Password, and you should now be logged into the LABS
UNIX servers.
