ASSIGNMENT 2 BRIEF
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
1. This document is to be read in conjunction with the Unit Guide for this unit.
2. It is the responsibility of each student to confirm submission requirements including
dates, time and format.
3. Extension or Special Consideration may be considered for late submission. It is the
responsibility of each student to understand Deakin's regulations regarding late

4. You will be required to complete Assignment 2 on an individual basis and the Assignment
carries 40% weighting for the final mark of this Unit.
5. All assignments must be submitted electronically through CloudDeakin. Assignments
submitted in any other way will not be marked.
6. Unless otherwise stated, all assignments submitted through CloudDeakin must be in
Portable Document Format (pdf).
7. You may refer to publications, but you must write in your own “voice” (for details, please

Assignment 2 – Practical Measurement Task (Individual)
PURPOSE
The purpose of this assignment is to enable you to:
• Articulate a basic understanding of the principles and practices of measurement.
• Demonstrate the use of the Australian Standard Method of Measurement as a tool
for completing measurement work.
• Develop the basic skills required to carry out measurement for simple types of
construction work.
• Apply information technology in measurement.
TASK
For Assignment 2, you are operating as a cost consultant or quantity surveyor representing
the client. You are required to carry out works leading up to, including the preparation of a
Bill of Quantities (BQ) to be issued during the tender stage. The task requires you to prepare
bills of quantities for the following work sections of the proposed house (refer to the attached
drawings numbered SRE272/T1 2022/01 and SRE272/T1 2022/02).
• Trench excavation for strip footings
• Disposal of surplus excavated materials from trenches
• Maintaining sides of trenches
• Backfilling to trenches
• Hardcore filling under the floor slab
• Damp proof membrane under the floor slab
• Provide preamble notes and preamble items related to the above-measured
items/trades
You are required to measure the works and prepare BQ in accordance with the requirements
of the Standard Method of Measurement that are applicable in Australia (i.e based on
ANZSMM or ASMM-6).
Please include the following in your report:
I. Unpriced Bill of Quantities (BQ): The BQ must be completed using a suitable software
package.
II. All relevant annotated drawings or marked-up drawings, screenshots of computer-
based measurements or any calculations must be included in your submission.

FORMAT OF ASSIGNMENT
The Assignment 2 report must be submitted as a single A4 PDF document, which will include
your un-priced BQ, screenshots, marked-up drawings and other supplementary materials.
Prepare all your works in a neat, tidy and professional manner. State any assumptions made
in your submission.
ASSESSMENT SUBMISSION
Submission is required on or before Thursday, 5 May 2022 by 8 pm through CloudDeakin
(The due date and times are to be read in accordance with AUSTRALIAN EASTERN STANDARD
TIME only).
