Assignment 2: Practical Quantitative Research Exercise

Type: In-Semester, Individual Assignment
Task Length: 2,000 words
Weighting: 20% of total assessment for this unit
Due Date: 11:55pm, 22 April 2022
Submission: electronic submission on MyLO
Description: This practical exercise will engage students in a quantitative research
exercise that will enable students to directly deploy skills, tools and
techniques covered in the unit. Each student will be required to
complete the exercise and prepare a written report that displays their
level of quantitativeresearch understanding and competence.

Objectives of Assignment:
• To increase understanding of the skills required to collect, analyse and
interpret quantitative research data;
• To increase understanding of the relationships between data collection, data
analysis and data interpretation when conducting quantitative ICT research;
• To develop skills and competence in the conduct of quantitative ICT research.

In this assignment, we will be conducting an investigation of the luggage handling
system’s efficiency at Melbourne airport. You have been presented with data across
four terminals (T1, T2, T3, T4) in Melbourne Airport for the period 1 January 2018 to 31
December 2019. The airport is interested in understanding the efficiency of the luggage
handling system across the 4 terminals and also to gauge if the automatic luggage
scanners have made a difference in the efficiency of the luggage handling process. The
researchers collected data on the average time taken for the first suitcase to arrive on
the baggage carousel across all flights in a day. The researchers also collected data on
the total number of luggages in the same time period. On 1 Jan 2019, the airport
introduced the automatic luggage handling system in Terminals 2 and 3.

Links to Intended Learning Outcomes
#1 Produce a research artefact by investigating an ICT related problem
#2 Apply different research methodologies to conduct ethical ICT research
CSV
heading Type Description
Date integer A date sequence from 01/01/2018 to 31/12/2019
(1 to 365 in each year)
Year integer Year (2018 and 2019)
Teminal string Terminal identification (T1, T2, T3 and T4)
Average time
taken
double Average time taken until the first luggage arrives on the
baggage carousel (in minutes)
Luggages integer Total number of luggages handled

Requirements:
Your task is to select and apply statistical analysis techniques to examine the data and
derive some conclusions to the following questions:

1. Formulate a research question with respect to the airport’s interest.
2. Select the appropriate data to conduct a statistical test to determine if there is a
significant difference between 2 independent groups.
• Describe and plot relevant data selected from the full dataset using an
appropriate chart.
• Formulate the appropriate hypotheses.
• Discuss and justify whether parametric or non-parametric test would be
suitable for this data.
• Run the appropriate statistical test and discuss the results.
3. Select the appropriate data to conduct a statistical test to determine if there is a
significant difference between 2 dependent groups.
• Describe and plot relevant data selected from the full dataset using an
appropriate chart.
• Formulate the appropriate hypotheses.
• Discuss and justify whether parametric or non-parametric test would be
suitable for this data.
• Run the appropriate statistical test and discuss the results
4. Select the appropriate data to conduct a statistical test to determine if there are
significant differences between more than 2 independent groups.
• Describe and plot relevant data selected from the full dataset using an
appropriate chart.
• Formulate the appropriate hypotheses.
• Discuss and justify whether parametric or non-parametric test would be
suitable for this data.
• Run the appropriate statistical test and discuss the results.

The output of your analysis will be a brief PDF report, including title, table of contents,
page numbering, introduction/conclusion, appropriate headings and subheadings (for
each of the four questions) with Harvard style of referencing.

Analysis Tool: use JASP, as same as in the tutorial.
